« on: January 08, 2008, 02:53:54 PM »

I have always had at least 1 rodent (curently have 1 chinchilla and 5 gerbils) and am now looking fo anothe companion animal.  I need something that is fiendly, and is a true companion, and am having some touble choosing.  any ideas?  also, cage size is an issue, as is price.

Wellif you want a companion animal then go for rats but if cage size and money are an issue then stay away from rats.

Hamsters are friendly once tamed but require large cages.

Mice are usually friendly, and can live in small wire cages or 10 gallon tanks and unless vet care is needed then they are rather cheap.

I will probably end up with 2-3 rats, but also want to explore other choices too.  would mice be okay with aily hanling?  are they friendlyer on their own?  is a glass or wire cage better?  are males or females more friendly?

Male mice tend to be more sociable, but more stinky. I'd suggest you go with 1 male.

If you get a well socialized mouse, it will love daily handling.

Wire or glass is up to personal preference. I personally like chatting with my mice through cage bars, but glass tends to be safer. (less chance of escape, easier to clean, less chance of "visitors" getting in.

I paid well over 130 dollars for my first pair of rats, so if money/cages really are an issue, be sure you do your research. lol

Cages are expensiveee unless you're talented and can make them reasonably. -.-

Well rats are much nmore friendly and social then mcie are at least in my experience. But if money, time and space are an issue then mice are really great pets. I have my boy in a 10 gallon on carefresh and he is the sweetest thing ever. <3
