Degu Diet

Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me with degus diet. I am gettting one, but it seems that their diet is complex. Thanks for your time.

It is very important that there be no sugar in their diet, as they are highly susceptible to diabetes...no corn, very few fruits...etc.

We get our degu food from www.exoticnutrition.com... They get fed this, along with Timothy hay, and a healthy browse mix, which they have to forage for.

Also, one degu is not a good idea...You should have at least 2 or 3, because they are very social creatures, and will spend a lot of time talking to each other and snuggling. They also tend to be very skittish.

Look for sites like www.deguworld.com for a lot of good info.

What is their degu diet like? I just checked the chinchilla part of their site and based on what they sell for chinchillas I wouldn't buy anything from them.

I feed mine Sunseed Degu Formula, and I like it ^_^ The ingredients seem pretty good and there's no sugars in it in any form.

It's possible to feed guinea pig food as long as it doesn't contain Molasses as an ingredient.  Don't let people fool you into thinking Oxbow is acceptable; it's not because mollasses is high on the list (at least, last I checked!)  I don't bother with chinchilla food as the only evidence I could find for why some people feed it/mix it with guinea pig food is that they're closely related to chins.  You're better off buying degu pellets online, however Gerty Guinea pig food with the yellow-bits removed  (they contain sugars, according to an owner who had personally called the company) is an acceptable substitute. It's cheaper but you get what you pay for in quality.
