One group of my rescued rats a long while ago came in the
2 story tank topper on a 10 gallon tank. Obviously, it wasn't good for 3 active ratties and they were promptly put into a much larger ferret cage. However, it is a very nicely built cage and at some point (and if the opportunity to rescue is tossed in my lap) I am thinking of getting a smaller rodent or two to try caring for something other than rats and goos. I would love to use this cage as it looks nice, it's easy enough to take apart and clean and I like the idea of having the benefits of a tank combined with the benefits of a wire cage.
I was strongly considering a syrian hamster but I wasn't sure if it would be okay in this? I don't believe there are any real harmful drops although the ramp is a little steep. That's my biggest concern. I'd use something to cover much of the wire, of course. I'd love to provide a lot of space and I really like this design over traditional cages/tanks, but if it's terrible for them please let me know! I also have a similar cage that another rescue came in that I can't find a link to. THe wire is the same but it's on a metal base rather than a tank, would that be better/worse? I'm almost certain the wire is too wide for dwarves, correct me if I'm wrong.
I also like gerbils, although I'm thinking they might be too similar to Degus and I'd really like to try for something a little less hyper. My 'goos are fun but I'd like something a bit calmer.
I don't think the wire spacing is okay for mice, nor do I think they'd be comfy on the higher levels, correct me if I'm wrong.
It's majorly possible that I'll sell it instead, but even so, is there any rodent that it's good for that I could mention (other than baby rats)? I might keep it for an extra hospital cage, but I'm again I'm not sure about the steepness of the ramps for a sickkie.
