Chiko the Cockatiel

« on: April 22, 2008, 01:17:52 PM »

I thought id share some photos of my mouse tank. The tents are bird tents. I got them but refuse to use them for birds since there have been cases of birds getting stuck on the fabric and dying. But their perfect hammocks for my little mice. And they LOVE them.

The tank is a 30 gallon tank.

after a feed of brocoli lol

just ran out of their feed so i gave em suebees mix that i feed the rats

before a clean and change around

What do you usually feed them? (I feed my mice Suebees rat diet and Mazuri lab blocks.)

That cage looks like sooo much fun!! And your mice are absolutely adorable!!!

I am considering getting some mice, in the research process but I am not sure if I may get some. If I were able to get some, I have a 20 gallon tall aquarium I might use. Do you know how many mice it would be able to hold comfortably? Of course I am planning on getting all female. Also, is there a mouse cage calculator like there is a rat cage calculator? xD

I would say 4, but it would be best to get the 20 gallon LONG, unless you managed to make levels in the tank using cardboard boxes and whatnot.

Well they were eating a premade mix untill i ran out but i didnt know i could give them suebees. if i can ill probably stick with that.

I have 4 mice in my30 gallon right now. they love it. They climb and jump around everywhere

everymorning i change the water and top up the food and I always have to reach into the tents to make sure no mice are in there. I always end up taking a different mouse out every morning lol

Wow!  Very nice set up! I bet your meecers love it!!

How did you get the mesh wheel on the side like that?  Dose it bang against the glass when they run?

And there is a mouse cage calculator: http://www.thefunmouse.com/info/cagecalculator.cfm

There is also a list at the bottom of the page saying how many mice per tank size.  Smiley

that's awesome! i have completely fallen for the mice at our petsmart and my husband said  i can get one from a rescue or breeder! i love looking at your set up, it gives me ideas for a set up for my future mouse. we recently discovered we are both highly allergic to mice..  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes we have an opening in our home for another pet though... we are looking into gerbils now.

I don't agree with the funmouses cage calculator >.>  I honestly do not thing any animals should be subject ed to a 2.5 gallon tank or even believe in that much room per mouse.  I believe that it should be 5 gals per mouse instead :3

as for some cage decorating ideas, here is my belated mouse, Yuki's, cage.
-->http://www.petbrags.com/photo/photo/show?id=1002763%3APhoto%3A40163&context=album&albumId=1002763%3AAlbum%3A41463

I also believe that a lone male mouse should have a 10 gal because of the ammonia build up from their urine.  The more floor space they have to pee everywhere, the less you have to clean the cage (I cleaned it once a week, if he had been in anything smaller I would have cleaned it a lot more often).

I know it's old, but I'm not sure I agree with the calculator.  I've got a 50 gallon L with 7 girlies, and I have added levels and hammocks, and I think it's too many.  I have to clean them every 3 days or they stink.  They did much better at 5 girlies in the 50 - so I think 10 gallons per mouse would be good.

I love your tank, it looks very fun for the mice Cheesy

I'll have to stop using those bird tents for my birds, I never knew untill now that they are dangerous.
I would like to get some for my mice tho. I'll bet they love them.

Do the mice like the tubes taped to the back? I've never tried that... I wonder if my girls would like it.

i use to have only mice because my mom wouldn't let me have rats Sad  But now that i do i only have one little boy left in a 10 gallon and i think i will be changing it because your tanks looks soo much more fun than mine.   Are your mice girls?>? I was going to get two or 3 girls but i ended up adopting 3 girl gerbils from CanNap from the heart. It looks awesome !
