RIP Topaz, I Miss You!!

« on: June 07, 2008, 11:55:35 AM »

I picked up my Short-Tailed Opossum two weeks ago, and got a new camera to take some cute pics of the little guy.  He's still fairly unhandlable right now, but he's only 3 months old, and will start working on taming in the next month.

And for the heck of it, a picture of Clive, my tiger morph crested gecko;

He looks even cuter,surrounded by all the fleece!!

Is that a baby snake? Or some reptile? Smiley

Thanks, fluffy pluffy.  Napoleon just gets cuter every day.

It's neither a snake, or any kind of reptile, actually.  It's a Chinese Fire-Bellied Newt.  I had them growing up, and when I was little they were my favorite pets.  They're not very common in this area, though, and when I saw one at Pet World in Madison I fell in love all over again.  They're fun little pets.

Cool,I've liked looking at reptiles for some time now. The ones at pet shops were fun to look at. Cheesy
I read the link you posted. Are they a lot of work? Seeing as they're pretty small,I can guess they aren't too much work,right? I mean,obviously,all animals take work,but they're tiny critters. Smiley If I get reptiles,or something like that,I'd never get anything that can only eat rodents..Having snakes eat them in the wild is enough for me. Tongue

  Grin Fish aren't so bad..I like fish,but small furry animals,being scarfed down,alive and whole by some huge slithery snake? ..I don't think so. Tongue Some turtles,and other things like that,reptiles I guess, eat minnows,watching that wouldn't make me faint.  Smiley

The newts are really easy to care for.  They don't need lighting or heat. They thrive in cooler temps. and require a three-fourths water to one-fourth land habitat.  My little guy is in a 2 gallon bow front kritter keeper type enclosure.  They're easy to handle (many people say not to, I always handled mine and they didn't seem to care either way.)  They eat freeze dried blood worms and tubifex cubes that you can buy from walmart or any pet store.  You can also give small cricket and wax worms sometimes.

Other easy to keep reptiles that don't require a ton of space or special lighting would be a crested or leopard gecko.  Cresteds don't even need insects to live, but a powder food that you mix with water called Crested Gecko Diet (can be purchased online, or at PetsMart/Petco for $5.) They don't need lighting, and thrive at room temperatures.  They're arboreal and need more climbing room than floor room, with vines, branches, driftwood, etc.

 Leos eat crickets mostly, with mealworms.  They need an under the tank heat pad, a 10 gallon tank (per leo,) no special lighting.  They like to climb some, but not much. They're desert critters and like floor room.

Both tolerate handling but not very personable.  Basically, the more personable the reptile, the harder and more expensive they are to keep.  Tongue
