Hi everyone.

I am getting this cage -
http://www.bigappleherp.com/Hagen-Zoo-Zone-Homes?sc=19&category=5006 (ZooZone2)
for one of my hamsters. It's very big.

I was wondering if it is good for mice or gerbils as well? I don't have mice but it's just something to consider? Oh and I will be covering the top wire with mesh. Smiley

Thanks!

I had a similar cage to this caged the Rody cage which I kept two Gerbils in quite happily. I think it was a little small for the two, I am not sure about cage sizes for Gerbils or mice - is there some sort of gerbil cage calculator you can use on the net - I know rat cage calculator exist.

I use it now as a transporter cage for my rats - it comes in useful.

39.25"L x 20"D x 16.75"H < those are the dimensions for this cage. They recommend a minimum of a 2 feet tank for gerbils. This cage is quite large but I am not sure if the type is fine for gerbils and mice.

I would definitely go with the bigger one and I wouldn't put more than two gerbils or mice in it. The problem is that the cage is plastic. As you know, gerbils, mice and hamsters are chewers. But if you aren't worried about that, I think the bigger one would be a good cage for all 3 species. Also, I don't know if a plastic cage gets stinkier sooner - especially with mice (and hard to get rid of) than an aquarium.
A 30 or 40 gal aquarium (the bottom surface should be a large area for the gerbils - height is not that important) might be a better option. You can get used ones on Craig's List.

I have this cage and use it for my rat that just had babies.  I would think it would be ok for a hamster or for a few gerbils.  It is bigger than you think by the picture.  I was able to fit a large igloo and a small cat litter pan in there with plenty or room to spare.  You would definately need to mesh the top though.  I had to do that with my female rat because she was able to get through the bars.

Thanks for the reply. May I ask how you meshed the top?

I had a hamster playpen and top the pieces apart (one of those colored panel type ones)  Then I zip tied them on the top.  Made the cover a little heavy but served the purpose.  I think if it were going to be used all the time I would use hardware cloth and ziptie it.  It won't be as heavy and would be a little neater.
