Hey,I've noticed that one of my mice,Velvet, has sort of a watery eye,I'm hoping it's not an infection. She's female,if that has anything to do with it. Tongue I'm just hoping that this isn't anything too much to worry over, last year I had a mouse that passed away from an eye infection, when she was perfectly healthy. tard So,is this anything I should be concerned about? I just don't want to lose her, she's too sweet.  Undecided

Update: Last night,I was watching Velvet walk around the cage, and noticed she had some missing fur around her left eye,it looked like she scraped it on something. I checked the cage for any sharp objects, they have soft hammocks, and the toys don't look like they have chew marks on them enough to scrape her, she's in a ten gallon with a friend,so I'm not sure how she hurt herself, the bedding is pretty soft, too, not sharp shavings. Also,it looks like she has some dried blood, right in the start of both her ears,or either that it's sore. Does anyone know what happened, and how I can help her? I dabbed a tiny bit of bag balm on the scrapes around her eye, though I'm not sure what to do about her ears. Should I get any kind of special medicine for her,or something? Please  help . Thanks,~Serenah.

Can you see an actual scrape or tear on the eye covering itself? Is the eye protruding? Does she have a redish orange discharge, poryphrin, around her eye?

If you couldn't find anything she might have scraped it on then I would assume she has something internal going on. I would definately get her to an exotic vet specialist. The only experience I have is a similar situation with a rat I had. She didn't have a watery eye but she did bleed from her right ear. Eventually the right side of her face swelled to the point her teeth misaligned and her eye started to protrude. She had to be put to sleep. ;[ My vet assumed it was either an abscess in her inner ear or a tumor, both of which were inoperable and it didn't respond to any treatment. If she shows any signs of facial swelling, my guess would be an abscess or tumor. Sending many vibes that that is not the case though.

The missing fur is starting to heal,I think. Her eyes themselves seem to be normal, nothing wrong with them. I looked at her ears again,I'm thinking that maybe she just accidentally hurt them when playing with her cagemate,or accidentally hurt it on a toy,or the side of the cage, something like that,it doesn't look like blood now that I look at it again, just like she banged it on something. She seems to be doing Ok,I haven't seen any kinds of swelling,I'm hoping that she just bruised herself, and that it will heal eventually. Thanks for the help,I tried doing dozens of searches on mouse injuries,I couldn't find any. tard Unfortunately,it's the middle of the night, and my mom has been working a lot lately,I'm not sure about that Vet visit, and also Velvet squirms around a lot when I hold her,she gets nervous really easily. Hopefully she will be Ok!  Undecided

I assume the blood is coming from the outside, rather than deep inside the ear? If the watery eye doesn't clear up on it's own after a day or so, you can get gentamicin eye drops from the vet that should clear it right up. Porphyrin can actually 'burn' off the hair around the eye if there is consistently porphyrin there, so that may be the issue with the eye. If she has a number or scrapes or scabs that don't heal or keep appearing, you may consider treating for mites. All your rats will need to be treated, unfortunately, as mites are mobile.

Out of curiosity, what is the situation with your rats that they are currently living in a 10 gallon tank?

Thanks for the info Mandy, and yes,the 'blood' is inside Velvet's ears, right at the start of them, right after where the fur stops in their ears. She has had scrapes/scabs that healed up pretty easily, and luckily her watery eye started to clear this morning,I'll check to see if there are mites in the cage as well.
Oh and,sorry,I didn't mention they're mice. Tongue
