My hamster doesn't like being disturbed (who does?) and we have a loud house, so we were thinking an atleast 20 gallon tank for her, but we don't know prices.  She lives in this, but she doesn't use third story, and only uses second story for water.

http://www.coastcages.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=45

Anyone know if this is a good trade? If we do get a twenty gallon, we would probably sell it at a garage sale or something, its terrible for my little tinkles.
Anyways, question is
1. Price for 20 gallon and topper? (just screen)
2. Where can i find?
3. Stick with cage or go with tank?

Is it a 20 gallon long or a 20 gallon tall? Or what are the measurements. Really a 20 gallon tall is too small for hamsters but it is considered the absolute minimum with a 20 gallon long being much better.

If you don't mind cleaning it then I think it is fine. Wink

I did the math and either way she has atleast the same amount of room but it would be long Tongue.

A 20L is 30X12X12 and it should be no more than 30 dollars. If you want just a screen top, then the screen alone will probably be around 15. Personally I like glass tanks for hamsters. They're easy to clean, they don't get chewed and you don't find bedding everywhere. If you want a screen tank topper, it can run anywhere from 20-50 dollars. Hope this helped!

I personally don't like tanks for any small animals, except gerbils for digging purposes. My hammy is in a 5 foot long, 3 foot tall rabbit cage and she is extremely happy! (Luckily the bar spacing on this rabbit cage is 1/2 an inch.

I hate those stupid coastal cages. They are such crap. I'm also opposed to having hamsters in a cage that has more then one floor. Hamsters have no depth perception and can fall. I had one hamster when I first started owning hamsters, that fell off the third floor of his cage, broke his neck, and obviously died. This was heartbreaking for me because I could have prevented it had I been more knowledgable. I suggest a 20 gallon long or a bin cage.

Here's a link to a page with instructions on how to make a bin cage:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2101498_hamster-cage.html

If you google it you can find instructions on other sites if that one doesn't work out for you.
Good luck!
