Homemade shampoo for pets and people!

I found this link on PlanetGreen.com and researched into it alittle bit.
http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/green-shampoo.html
You can make your own shampoo and add whatever essential oils you want, but I checked the Soap Flakes website and they can also be used as pet shampoo. I'm unhappy with the type of shampoo available on the market today because of all the chemicals and frangrences in it. I've found one truly natural shampoo for my pets but it's about $16 for a 8 oz bottle. Soap flakes are made from a 100% vegetable base from palm and coconut oils. I'm definately going to use this recipe for myself and my pets. Here's the website for Soap Flakes brand. I think that there are other brands too but all are made out of palm and coconut oils and are eco friendly and biodegradable.

Im going to get on my "soap" box
It is interesting to see what people come up with in the name of "its good for you and or the environment".
I dont understand why these "environmental" people dont put any thought into what consequences the concoctions they are coming up with have in the name of better for something.
This right here is a food poisoning time bomb. After 4 hrs at room temp it would go toxic.
1 empty bottle
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon of baby oil
Water
The irritating thing is that there is no caveat as in use it once and throw it away or keep it in the fridge and throw away after a week or something.
That means they posted it and never even tried it. They said to put it in a bottle.
People read this posted info that appears to something no one actually tried. They influence people to go out and spend money they don't have on stuff that wont get them what the need. And may even make them sick.
As far as the soap flakes there isn't really a problem with them though they tend to build up in fibers. The essential oil of lavender should be kept away from pets, I don't know about the rosemary.
Washing your hair with a true soap can make it tangly it can be hard on the hair.
Personally I cant stand the smell of a true soap after its rinsed off. However Dr Bronner's makes some very good organic soaps. They are super concentrated and you can use them for everything even cleaning around the house. I just don't like the smell, it reminds me of bad things when I was a kid.
http://www.drbronner.com/DBMS/LS.htm
I use the Kiss My Face bars and Pure Life Soap Co. shampoos and lotions and Mrs. Meyers Clean Day soaps because I like the smells.
I just hate to see people go out and spend hard earned money on things that dont work or are bad for you. Just because its natural doesn't make it good for you. Just because its on the internet doesnt make it true.
*gets off her soap box*

I'm pretty sure the "conditioner" is a one time use thing. Not sure how far only one egg yolk and a tsp of baby oil would go if being used multiple times. I have some bar soap for Amos that is made with a vegetable base.. glycerin maybe? I love the way it cleans but I bought it at a small shop over an hour away and I'm not sure what the company is called so I could order it online.

My aunt used to make soap and she told me that after researching she found that rosemary shouldn't be used by people with high blood pressure. For some reason it'll make it go higher. Also rosemary can aggravate epileptic seizures.

All i want to really say is that herbs and oils should be researched first.

Yup...thats my pet peeve too. People just take things off the shelf in the health foods section and figure its got to be good for them. Even the people that work there push things like the sleep aid htp-5 or whatever it is but its pretty bad for you.
I had looked up everything that I was taking but it seems I missed that bit about the Rosemary.
Thing is that there really is no research in all of this like mainstream meds.

I am severly allergic to rosemary and lavendar. It is incredibly hard to find a soap that does not contain sulphur and neither of those two ingredients. They are the like the "wonder" ingredients of the "naturals" and it drives me crazy. Pet peeve of mine when an allergy friendly product actually contains allergens that are pretty common.
I know not all products can be used by all people, but a few decent products that are basic shouldn't be too hard. I have considered making my own and then selling them. I would make them wheat/dairy/soy/nut/essential oil free. Celiac's shouldn't use any product with dairy or wheat. It's actually amazing how many products contain those. Then people allergic to soy shouldn't use soy based - again find something without it. A lot of naturals contains nut extracts - geeez. Then anyone with smell sensitivities - migraines, headaches, allergy symptoms from smells have issues with the essential oils.
I truly wonder how many people who suffer from migraines are actually causing them with the products they use at home. You get up in the morning and take a shower with scented shampoo, scented conditioner, then your soap is scented. Don't forget the moisturizer/sunscreen and some make-ups are scented. Of course none of them are the same scent. Go downstairs for breakfast and you might load up on artificial colors/dyes/flavors along with the artificial sugars. Might dab on some perfume. Then every single cleaning product is either scented or has a harsh smell (I know there are exceptions). Then if they own carpet that might be off gasing along with any newer varnishes/wood finishes/paint or any other newer construction material.
Off to work where they use a large assortment of nasty scented cleaners, carpet, aweful lighting, 9000 different people wearing 9000 different scents etc....
I think looking around ones environment is highly overlooked and people forget that when mixing 2 safe products together they can create a nonsafe product.
sorry for the rant - even pet shampoo now comes in "fun" scents - give me a break. Like the cat cares if it smells like cucumber.

This is kind of OT I guess but I HATE scented dish soap. You wash your dishes with it then they smell/taste like berries. Who wants to drink water out of a glass that smells like berries? I say berries because that's what I'm trying to use up at the moment.

So, does anyone know if the Soap Flakes are tested on animals?? I looked over the site listed, and it didn't say anything about that...
Cause, I'm trying to transition to a life that doesn't use any animals whatsoever, and that means that all cosmetics/soap/perfume/etc need to be cruelty-free and vegan... I'm doing pretty well on the eating part of veganism <~~is that a word?... I'm almost completely food vegan (*I don't know if you guys even care, but I'm just so proud of myself, I just had to share*
)
Back to what I was saying...
Or, if the Soap Flakes aren't vegan/ cruelty-free does anyone know of any other products or brands that I should check out?
oh, and one other thing... it would make me
uber
happy if the products were environmentally friendly too!
any information would be greatly appreciated!!!!

They have vegan and organic products. I use their lotion and shampoos.
They can be found at
http://www.lifesvigor.com/
.
I use Dr Bronners lip stuff, as I said previously in this thread I dont like the smell of soap so I dont use his other products.
http://www.drbronner.com/DBMS/LS.htm
Probably vegan but all I know for sure is its organic.
The baby line can likely be used on animals, dont know about ratties.
Stick with an almond or vanilla scent for the other stuff as the others could be toxic.

I dont know why it doesnt say vegan on pure lifes site but the rosemary shampoo and conditioner I have says vegan. The aloe night lotion doesnt but its and older style label.
They are good at responding to emails I would ask.
I personally dont care if things are vegan, but I am always looking for others that are.

Yah... I'll ask...
If you're looking for vegan stuff, (actually, I have no idea I didn't think to use this site before asking you guys... lol) you can go you caringconsumer.com and it's got a really big list of companies that are vegan/ don't test on animals....
LOL, I feel really dumb that I didn't just check that site first...

One thing about rosemary, it's a fantastic natural flea repellant. I used to take branches (we used to have a rosemary bush in our yard the size of a Buick) and make a few gallons of strong tea out of them, then rinse my dogs, after I bathed them. It works as long as you can smell the rosemary. In between dunkings, I used to rub the branches over their fur. I still rub my current dog with fresh branches. It definitely does the trick, my dog has never been infested.

Congratulations on your transition to veganism (that's the word.
) I've been vegan going on seven years and if you ever want any help or info, feel free to PM me. You can also look into veganpeople on Live Journal.
If you have a Whole Foods Market nearby, nothing in the Whole Body dept. is tested on animals.
Note: some of the items (Tom's of Maine, for example) are smaller 'companies' whose products aren't tested but they are owned by a larger parent company that does test. Colgate bought Tom's, in this instance. You can check out
http://www.leapingbunny.org
for info on companies that don't test at all and meet the strict standards necessary for the bunny and which don't test but are owned by those who do.
Good luck as you continue to move from strict vegetarianism (dietary veganism) to the complete vegan lifestyle (no animal products/by-products at all - as far as is practical and possible. Some things we just can't avoid in this society. We do our best though!).
The animals thank you!
