Title: Official Request-A-Vet Thread.
Post by: Suebee on March 18, 2004, 09:14:12 AM
Please use this thread to request a vet recommendation specific to your area. If someone knows of one, they can quote your request, and supply a recommendation.

Same rules apply that apply to our Recommended Vet List (http://www.goosemoose.com/rfc/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=19879) in the Reference Desk:

If You Use This Resource
Please don?t abuse this information. Do not contact a vet who?s never seen your animals before, asking for free advice just because you see their phone number or email address listed here. Make a proper appointment, take your rats in, get to know the vet, and let the vet get to know your pets. Additionally, in many cases it is unethical for a vet to diagnose an animal without having seen it in person. We don't want vets asking to have their names removed from this list because too many people were soliciting free advice.

Disclaimer
RatsRule.com, Goosemoose.com, and the people who have recommended the veterinarians on this list cannot make any guarantees about quality of work. Additionally, any recommendation of a particular vet should not be taken as a recommendation of other vets at the same hospital -- each vet has their own areas of expertise. You should thoroughly check out any veterinarian for yourself to see if they meet your requirements. through compiling this list, we just wish to share our positive experiences with the community, and possibly give people a place to start.

Thank you.

I'm wondering if there are any good vets south of Seattle, WA.  I know there are a couple of WA vets on the recomended list, but they're all a long way from me, and I don't drive.  :(

Ratatouille's sneezing is getting worse poor thing. It's more violent and she seems bothered by her nose afterwards. I think I need to get her checked out  :(

Can anyone suggest a vet in London? North London ideally. I'm in Southgate for anyone who knows.

I'd also appreciate some advice on how much this might cost us?

I have a good vet now, but ive discoverd that although hes great with dogs and cats, I seem to know more than he does with the rats when it comes to specific things like MC and such.  hes fine for minor things, but I would rather have a vet who is skilled with rats in my area.  (Tacoma Washington) Must be reasonably priced (ie, no $40 exotics fee PER rat like some ive been to before...)

Looking for a vet in the Williamsburg/Newport News, Viriginia area. I've taken them to one in VA Beach who was great, but that's over an hour's drive away.  I'd really like something closer, preferably within a half hour of Williamsburg.  I also used to take them to Noah's Ark in Wmsbrg, but their rat vet left. I tried Jolly Something-or-other, but their small animal vet specializes in rabbits and wasn't terribly rat-knowledgeable.

I hope people other than the requesters actually read this thread occassionally....   :-\

Hey, still looking for a rat vet in western Pennsylvania.  People around here think of my girls as either food for something bigger or as icky things they set traps for! :o  If anyone has any helpful info, please, please, please contact me.  I've asked around here and the vets all laugh at me for wanting to bring in my rats.  :-  :worry:

Thanks.

Panda Phil:  I know how you feel because I also do not drive but my little dependents still deserve the best.  My recommendation is the Bird & Exotic Clinic in Seattle (I would recommend them over Barbara Deeb for rats, but I would recommend Barbara Deeb for rabbits - just from my experience).  However, if you cannot find a bus to that area, I would definitely call them or the Rabbit, Rodent, and Ferret House (www.rabbitrodentferret.org) and ask if they know of anyone in your area that they recommend.  We have never gone wrong with a recommendation from RRFH.

Thanks Treefrog. I'll look them up and see if I can find an address.

Funny thin gis, it's actually easier for me to get into Seattle by bus than it is a lot of the outlying communities.

I have a pretty good vet who I trust and who is good with my rats, but I am looking for something possibly more cost-efficient.  Good vets and bad vets I've been to around here charge the same.   :-\

Chesapeake, VA; and I am willing to drive, especially since I know I have some place local if I have a real emergency.  For reference: vets around here want around $200 for a male rat's neuter, and Poe's tumor removal cost me about $345.  I would like to be able to afford care for all my rats, and not break the bank when one of them needs medical attention.   :-[

Kira and Brandy:  I'm located in Richmond, VA and I go to a WONDERFUL vet.  His name is Dr. Billeter and his practice is Hanover Animal Hospital.  He doesn't know EVERYTHING about rats, since I think I'm only one of the very few rat people he deals with, but he's super-ready to learn.  He is very cost-efficient, too.  To remove a mammary tumor from Selene AND spay her, he only charged $105.  She recovered beautifully.  For Baytril he charges under $20 for a 2-week supply, and a brief exam is only $15.  He has never charged me for euthanizations.

If anyone wants his phone number, feel free to PM me.  It's well worth it to drive if you need some sort of surgery done; he's absolutely amazing.

Does anyone know a vet in the Memphis, Tennessee area?  I'm moving there for graduate school.  We'll actually be living in Horn Lake, Mississippi, but anywhere in that area, Olive Branch, Southaven, Germantown, Cordova would be fine.  I don't mind the drive as long as I have a vet who knows what he/she is doing.

I can definitely second Tizzrah's recommendation of Dr. Billeter... $45 neuter, and he saw the other two rats free of charge when I brought Merlin in pre-neuter.  He's a wonderful, caring man, and definitely willing to learn.  Merlin was his first neuter, but I had no problems whatsoever.

Also in the Richmond, VA area, Lakeside Animal Hospital.  All three vets there seem to be very knowledgeable.  I used to go to them for everything except rats and rabbit when I lived up there.  Also very cost-conscious (didn't charge me for my mouse's weekly check ups when she broke her foot).

Down here in Virginia Beach, I recommend Dr. Fisher at Pet Care Vet. Hosp.  Dr. Hulls is supposed to be good with small furries too, but don't go to Hulls for reptiles.  He told me my monitor was fine with a 5:1 calcium:phosphorus ratio.  (should be 2:1)  I've never seen Fisher myself, but I've heard from a couple people that he's awesome with furries, especially ferrets and buns.  I'll be going to Fisher on Monday, so I'll update this then.  I don't know how Pet Care is monetarily.

I would like to recommend against Dr. Morris of Va. Beach Vet. Hosp.  He seems knowledgeable, but if you don't carry $200+ around with you constantly (I don't use checks or credit, only cash), then forget it if you have an emergency.  Also, he's done some very unethical things because of money.

As far as herps (if anyone's interested), I've heard that Providence Square Vet. Hosp. is really good, but I forget which doctor.  If I have another reptile problem, I'll be going there.  Might go there to get Gaz (African fat-tailed gecko) checked for worms anyway since she was probably wild caught.

Rabbit vet in Norge (near Williamsburg):  Dr. Bonnie Brown of Noah's Ark Vet. Hosp.  She's an AMAZING woman.  She does yearly checkups for the rabbits at the rescue I volunteer for.  She also sees my personal bunnies.  I was very impressed with her.  Had my male neutered there, no problems at all.

Also, I've never been to him, but Dr. Scott Stahl (NorVA) is supposed to be really excellent with furry and scaley critters, as well as birds.  He's written many articles on care and health, and considering I live all the way on the other side of the state and have heard of his greatness... that's pretty good.  If I ever move to NorVA for some reason, I'll be using him.

That's all the vets in VA I've heard of, hope I helped someone out.

I live in Frisco,TX and can't find a vet that is close.  The vet I used recently in Frisco charged $57 dollars for the office visit and did not seem to know much more about rats than I do.  The closest exotic pet vet that I have found is in irving, a one hour drive from my house.

Post by: bevluvsrats on January 23, 2005, 05:24:20 PM
A wonderful rat vet in Essex, UK, is Lyndon Basha at Animal Ark. I personally live in Surrey and travel a round trip of 70 miles to take my animals to him even though there are at least 3 vets in my immediate area.

he used to keep rats of his own, he knows them well and isn't afraid to try new things. He's saved the life of many of my rats when other vets would have given up.

I first went to him after a friend of mine recommended him to me, my vet at the time had diagnosed my rat with an inoperable tumourm it turned out it was nothing more than an abscess which Lyndon took off, but if it had gone undiagnosed, the rat wouldn't have lived much longer. As it was, he had most of the next year with me thanks to Lyndon.

Animal Ark is in Goodmayes, which is round the corner from Ilford, and not too far off the M25. In fact it's just off of the A12.

I have the best vet in the world!!! Ratracer also goes to him and she thanks me over and over for recommending him  ;D
He's located in Middletown and Portland, Connecticut.
He sees dogs, cats and small animals (maybe more but I'm not sure). I brought Bella over to see him and he did all he could for her.
When my princess had to have 2 tumors removed I was bringing her to New Britian to see her *other* vet (Bella had 4 vets) when I found out that it was going to be $500 I thought I was going to die of a heart attack. I cried for days. I didn't know what to do. So I looked and looked for other vets. Finally I came across my vet right now and fell in love with him. He's so sweet and soft spoken. Lennox and Solace have already gone to see him and for the vet visit (plus meds) for BOTH it came out to only $30. Hey, when you own like 14 rats you seriously can't beat that price.  ;)

If anyone lives in central CT and would like this fantastic Dr's phone number just PM me.

The only vets *I* know of here are down in Southern Maine (Portland), which is of no help to you, obviously...  Does Sunilata know of any good vets in your area (I can't remember how close you two are distance wise)?  You could also try sending kimmyizme a pm.  She lives down here as well, but, may know of some decent vets through the other shelters up there.

Other than that, all I can suggest is you move down here so you can see Dr Ann.  ;)

Desperately seeking a vet in the Flint, Michigan area.  The vet that's been seeing our girls, who also sees our more "traditional" animals, just doesn't have the knowledge base necessary to treat our ratties anymore... they just keep sneezing and sneezing, one sounds almost like she's wheezing now.  We've changed their litter SEVERAL times, the vet put them on a week's worth of Doxycycline, which hasn't seemed to help... when I called the vet, he said, "As long as they're still eating and active, there's nothing to worry about," which I kind of disagree with.  Thoughts?

Title: Re: Official Request-A-Vet Thread.
Post by: SunWolf on April 09, 2005, 11:12:48 AM
A "week's worth" is not enough...most recommend at least 21 days.  You might try going back and asking for a doxy/batril combination and get enough for 3 weeks.  You can go to "ratguide.com" and print out some of the recommendations to take to your vet so he/she can learn more about ratties, since it sounds like they are at least willing to "do rats".

You are correct in that, not recommended for ratties under 4 months (unless everything else has failed).  I still suggest going to ratguide.com, to the health guide section, and print out the article on Mycoplasma/mycoplasmosis.  Take this to your vet for reference and see what they can do.

SimplyCathleen- there is quite a long list of vets in Virginia if you scroll down on this site.  I don't live in Virginia, but I found this site- it's helped many with their state's vets (It lists all the recommended vets from members of that site in each state on it.)  Definately worth checking out! http://www.ratfanclub.org/vetref.html

Goosemoose has a new feature to help people look for vets.  Check under the main home page, vet Directory, about half way down the left hand side. Or you can find it under the resource menu at the top of this page, click on vet directory.

:-  :worry:

Thanks.

Naomi, and the girls: Edward and Monkey.

There were two articles written about my vet "DR. MIKE" as the Rat Doctor!  his name is Dr. Mike Hutchinson   his practice is called Animal General  it's in laSalle Plaza in cranberry pa... i do not know the phone number (i'm currently living in New York for school so it's not one of those need to know numbers right now)  He is a really good rat guy!  I HIGHLY suggest him!

Hey I need a vet ASAP for my rat, but I live in the 90007 area code in Los Angeles, CA and don't know any vets that take care (or are knowledgable) about rodents. I would definitely prefer one that wouldn't charge inordinate fees, but I'd take most anything as of now. Thanks.

Hi damandawg,
I use a vet out in Montclair which is about 35-40 minutes for you who is a great rat vet. Check out her information in our Vet Directory (under resources at the top of the site). Her name is Dr. Batt and there is a Dr. Lidikay there who is also an awesome vet to my previous ratties.

PLEASE READ!!!

I know a lot of you are concerned about your animals, and costs seem pretty high. Take the time to search online for a vet clinic near you that specializes in exotics as well--this usually means they care for smaller rodents, including rats, e.g. not just specializing in cats and dogs.

DO use yellowpages.com and google/yahoo local. I just found an additional vet clinic nearby (6 miles away) which offers 50% off new clients first visit exams. There are lots of these offers floating around; do NOT be afraid to call and ask!!! I've called plenty of clinics asking how much the office visit fee is, and also if they were offering discounts.

Lastly, good luck! and good health.

Ok, I've called 3 vets, 1 does not work with rats at all, one does "routine" things, like breathing problems exams, etc... the other is more thurough (spelling? lol), but does not do spays, an when they do, it is over $300.......for ONE girl! now if it were an emergancy, sure, but it's not, an I can't afford to do that "just because"..

So does anyone know of any vets around ottawa kansas?

So, if you have any reccomendations for me, PLEASE let me know! Though I'd certainly drive an hour and a half to get my rats medical help, it'd be a weight off my gas and such to be able to go somewhere closer.

I saw a few people in L.A. looking for a good rat vet. If you can come to Torrance (about 20-30 min drive from L.A. with traffic, 10 with no traffic, LOL.) there is a WONDERFUL vet who takes care of me, Dr. Maria. She doesn't charge me for the vet visit if my rats need medicine or surgery. She'll only charge for the medicine/surgery.

My daughter's heart rat, Chocolate, had a HUGE (we're talking softball size here) tumor, and Dr. Maria actually removed the tumor!! It was twice the weight of the rat! It cost me $200, but the few extra months we had Chocolate was SO worth it!

I had Dr. Maria put many of my rats to sleep. She is very compassionate and gave me a hug every time, because I'd always cry. Then I would get a card in the mail from her office, saying sorry about my loss. EVERY time. Even when I would call her from home and tell her one of my rats that we were trying to medicate had died, I would get a card in the mail within the next couple of days.

She tries very hard to keep costs low for us rat owners, and she is very knowledgeable about rats. I never asked her if she did spaying/neutering, so that's something you'd have to call and ask if she does and how much.

Pacific Veterinary Center  (310) 791-5123

Tell her Joy Bailey recommended you! :)

YES--Dr. King in South County --St. Louis==great with rat surgeries and won't charge an arm and a leg!  Cares very much and also will listen if you happen to know what meds you actually need as opposed to what he suggests (if you have resources like from here or the rat med guide).  Watson Road Veterinary Clinic--Dr. Jay King.  Like a spay for $40-$45.  Excellent at mammary tumor removals, too.  Cares about ratties.  Would have emailed you, but you didn't have your email listed (and I don't know how to PM on here).

My vet is great for neuters and other surgeries (Dr. Chouinard at vet Taché) but she does not feel comfortable doing spays. Does anybody have a vet in the area to recommend who woud be ok with doing the surgery.

Price is not really all that important. I am more concerned with finding a good surgeon.

There's got to be a rat vet somewhere near me, but I've looked and looked and can't seem to find one! I need a vet recommendation. I found a lump near one of my ratties armpit today. It's about the size of a large pea but it seems to be in the loose skin and not really attached. I want to take her to a vet asap, and I've heard some bad rumors about my current vet (really not sure if I believe it) but I really don't want to take any chances. I need a good vet in the ROCHESTER area of NEW YORK.

Any recommendations would be great but I want to make her an appointment by tomorrow, so if I don't have any solid leads I'm going to have to go with my current vet. Sigh I'm a bit worried :(

p.s. I'm new to this forum, and I've been meaning to introduce myself  (I don't believe I have) so I shall do that elsewhere. Thanks for the help in advance!!!!

I have a suggestion/recommendation for a vet in

FORT WORTH, TEXAS

The last time I was at my dog/cat vet, I asked if they treated rats.  They gave me a flyer to a vet a few miles away who specializes in exotics.  I have not yet been there, but I am planning on inquiring about neuters for my guys.  One caveat: The flyer states that the vet raises 4-H and FFA meat pen rabbits.  Being a vegan and animal welfare activist, I don't agree with this, but if he's the only exotics vet around then I'll just have to swallow my pride.

Here is the info and website....

Ridglea West Animal Hospital
Dr. Craig Verwers, D.V.M.
4404 Southwest Blvd.
Fort Worth,TX 76116
817-763-0261
www.ridgleawest.com

Hours:
MWThF 7:00a - 6:00p
Tuesdays: 8:00a - Noon
Saturdays 8:00a - 1:00p

He is located in the Ridglea section (far southwest Fort Worth) on Southwest Blvd/Alta Mere Dr/Route 183, between I-20 and I-30.  I'm sorry, but he is not convenient to Dallas or suburbs further east.

UPDATE:
I stopped in this vet office this afternoon to inquire about pricing.  I asked about rat spays and neuters, and here is the exact procedure estimate I was given:

Neuter
Exotics Exam.....$76
Neuter.............$78
New Record (?)....$3
Metacam (pain)..$44 (optional)
Penicillin............$11 (optional)

Total for Rat Neuter (including optional meds)  $212

Spay
Exotics Exam.....$76
Spay...............$181
New Record (?)....$3
Metacam (pain)..$44 (optional)
Penicillin............$20 (optional)

Total for Rat Spay (including optional meds)  $324

This is the first time I've taken/inquired about rat or exotics veterinary care, but are they all this pricey?  I respect vets and the schooling and experience they have, but this estimate is much higher than I ever imagined it would cost.

Sorry, maybe you don't have counties in Canada so you assumed I'd meant to write "country" instead? It's just hard for people to help you if you're not very specific. Do you mean southern Ontario as in Toronto area?

East Hills Veterinary Hospital in Antioch ca. Sees rats and they are good. Sneezing can be a sign of many things, start of by doing a bedding change. I prefer Aspen for the younger rats and Carefresh for older geriatric rats. (prevents bed sores) Some bedding cause Upper Respiratory infections. After a bedding change see if he is an area with drafts, a cold rat is a sick unhappy rat. try using old blankets to cover cages from top to bottom, your rat will take pieces of the blankets to make him or her much warmer and more confortable. Echanasia is also very very very good immune response its a great anti tumor agent and boosts natural immunity to colds and the sniffles. Just add a few drops to there water. and you will know the difference. Also yogurt with live cultures are wonderful (use about 1/2 tsp.) they build nice gastrointestinal defenses and make a rat very happy (Activia etc.) My rat Emilio has been on this system for his now 4 1/2 years of life. And remember EPSOM Salts work wonders for sore feet, bumble foot,  bed sores, abscesses. Use 1/2 cut Epsom salt to 1 1/2 cup of warm water, soak 2 times a day for about a week.

I actually just had my first follow-up phone call from a vet from Spirit of 76th! I'm so happy that we found our vet so quickly! I'm not sure, though, if he acutally just remember their names or not (he probably just looked at their files lol), but still to take his time before hospital hours to call and check-up is something I've never experienced! Not only this, but when we went in, he spoke with us about about reptiles and what are good starter herps and spoke with us a good five/ten minutes after the appointment to give us more info about iguanas and beardies (even though we already knew most of it, he just wanted us to know the major differences in care as far as most lizards and iguanas lol).

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS VET TO ANYONE in or around Milwaukee, WI.

Need a vet in San Antonio, TX.  We found one that would see Terras baby when he had head tilt, but he charges $50 per animal for exam fees.  2 rats seen, plus meds for ten rats for ten days cost almost $150.  Multiply that by the current total of 11 rats, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 2 guinea pigs and way too many mice and pretty soon I won't be able to buy groceries.  Plus he's only available for limited hours a few days a week, making it very inconvenient on top of being expensive.  I'll drive any where in the general area if I can find a good vet.

Luckily, my veterinarian treats rats. I was so pleased with her knowledge and her stories about her own hooded rats that she refused to experiment on in school. She examined two of my rats, and prescribed Baytril for all four. Total cost was $90.
She is located in Middle Village, Queens, NYC. Dr Sqillace-Anteleys Animal Hospital. (718) 386 0655.

Has anyone been to Dr. Peter W. King in Mexico NY?  One of my girls is sick, and that's the only place I could get an appointment any time this week *facepalm*  I can get her in there tomorrow, and made an appointment, but wanted to see if anyone had had any experience with him?  Pricing?  Anything?

EDIT:
VET RECOMMENDATION:

So, I went to the appointment, and Dr. King was great!  He was the first vet I've brought my girls to, that put something down on the cold table for them to stand on, AND gave her a treat afterwards  :cheeky:    He's got reasonable prices, today's visit came to $52, for the exam and Banana-Bread flavored Baytril. He also owns rats of his own, and was great with mine!    I would definitely recommend him to anyone around Oswego County in Central NY!
