Title: Pau D'Arco dosing
Post by: the_pumpkin_queen on April 21, 2004, 04:53:21 PM
I was wonderign what the normal dosage amount was for Pau D'Arco. Since Nimbus had her tumour removed I'd like to start treating ALL our ratties with it. I got some capsules that are 500mg each. So how do I give it to them and how much.

I give my girls 4 drops a day. It seems to be keeping their tumors at bay. At least something is keeping them from growing very fast...

Pau d'arco is a plant. It's proved successful in the shrinking of tumors on rats, and I think it's supposed to be beneficial to humans, too. You can buy it in tea form, capsules, or an extract/tincture (there may be other forms, I'm not sure....) I know that Aileen has used it a lot in the past (with her ratties)...you could PM her, and I'm sure she'd be happy to tell you more about it.

If you can find it, I'd probably get the liquid (in alcohol) version of Pau D'Arco, pumpkin.  It's easier to dose, and I think there's a difference in how well it works?  My boy Tripoli is getting 10 drops, twice a day, but he also has a lung mass and was doing pretty poorly...   He's improved a little, but it's something he'll always have to deal with until he's not happier anymore.

As far as useage on humans, I thought I heard somewhere that the effective dosage in humans would have to be at a fatal level.  I don't remember where I heard/read that though.

Someone also mentioned in the past couple of days --thank goodness!-- that if you decide to have the tumors removed, stop using Pau D'arco at least seven days prior because it's a blood thinner. I was so glad I read that!! In case Vlad needs surgery next week, I probably wouldn't have thought to mention the Pau D'Arco to the vet and he may not have known that anyway, so thanks again to whoever mentioned it.

**raised hand ** it was me.

Also, Pau D'Arco only works on one type of cancer, but I can't remember which one it is. So it is pretty hit and miss as to whether it will work or not.

Tinctures are always the best way to go with herbs, as the are the strongest. Stay away from the teas as they are pretty ineffective.
