Title: Which Martin's Cage?
Post by: rollipolli on June 29, 2005, 10:04:21 AM
I'm stuck between which cages I should get. I'm getting multiples of whichever I choose, but I only plan on having atleast 7-10 rats at one time. These are the Martins Cages I was going to get:

http://www.martinscages.com/products/cages/rat/

4 - Rat Highrise (H-600HR)
2 - Rat Skyscrapers (R-695)

I haven't decided which cages I like. I like the pricing on the H-600HR but I like to roominess of the R-695. Does anyone have either of these?

Also, are there any other cages that you guys would recommend? I'm looking into making my own "bookshelf cages" too.

I have a 680 and a 695. I like them both a lot. ;D

Though... the 695 really is not big enough for that many rats... I wouldn't keep more than 5 or 6 in one, at the extreme maximum... I assume you're planning on getting more than one cage?

Yeah, I was either going to buy 2 rat skyscrapers or 4 rat highrises ...  i didn't know which design was better .. i like the idea of alot of shelfing but i still want to be able to reach in and get them out when i need to..

The Highrise is actually really small. The 695 is by far the best bet!

The 600 is WAY too small, for any rats really.  I don't know why they even have it on there...  *shrug*  I'd definetly go with the 695.  Or...  You could always go with a Ruud! (Holds about 10-11 I think)

I don't own a Martin's rat cage (my rats live in a Martin's ferret cage (f-475)) but i really like the design of the R-695 and have been eyeing it up for a quarantine cage thats baby safe (my current quarantine cage is a superpet ferret cage). Not sure if i can convince hubby that i need it though  ;).

So i would definetly recomend the r-695, also using the rat cage calculator the H-600hr is only big enough for 1.3 rats (and costs $50) and the R-695 is big enough for 5.6 (and costs $99.50 or 109.50 with a flip top), so it seems much more cost effective to me to go for the bigger one(s). (the prices i list are for the powder -coated since galvanized gets really stinky fast, and can be dangerous)

good luck  ;D

i own the 685 which is good for my 3 (sometimes 4) rats.

only one rat can fit in it comfortably, or two small rats. when i contacted diane martin (the owner of the company) about why it was on the page, she told me that the 600HR was put on the page as a transport cage or a hospital cage. however she was quite suprised at where the cage had been put in relation to the other cages and contacted her web page person to have it moved. apparently that person is too busy, though.

to see how big the cages are in comparison to eachother, as well as in comparison to a 500g rat:

The highrise is definately way too small.  I wish they would put a rat for scale next to their cages, or at least show how many rats can live in their cages.  Anyway, I have the Ruud, which I belive is the 695 and 680 stacked on top of eachother.  I love having the option of splitting my Ruud in half in case I need to.  But I would definately go with the 695
