I made these to be Nekkid friendly, meaning NO Metal clasps to pinch or pop open unexpectedly. The toggles I use are very strong and will hold under strain. The cording used is very soft and non irritating to nekkid skin. The "nekkid friendly" cording color choices right now are Black and White. The color choices for Furry rats are pretty much anything you desire, I have sparkley and metallic.

I have pretty much any color you can imagine, and if I don't have it I don't mind trying to find it for you. Metallic, neon, clear colored, glow in the dark, and a few shapes (which I try to include in each one).

Shapes INCLUDE: Butterfly, Star, Hear, Flower.

I will try to color match the toggle to the desired cording color or beads.

You also have a choice of beads on the leash handle, up to 3 colors can be used, or if you desire a particular shape or style let me know I will try and accommodate. I'm just doing plain beads right now, but promise I will be doing customs and fancy beads as soon as I can get a decent bead provider (I should know within the next week)

Beads come in any color imaginable, I even have puce.

Goobers experience using the leash is good, he walks on it on the grass and does not chew at it. I make sure to leave a pinkie's room between the harness and him. These are NOT recommended to be left on unattended rats (but who would leave their rat outside unattended?) or for LONG periods of use. I also do not recommend these for "anxious" or flighty rats as they might have a tendency to get chewed.

Like a few of the hammock makers on this forum I am doing this to no benefit of myself and all proceeds will be donated to various organizations. This is also why I have decided not to give out the instructions on how to make them. I hope anyone purchasing these will understand this is for a good cause and to not be used for mass production or to personally financially benefit said users. I know, they are relatively simple and easy to make, but these are to benefit the rats, and really these put NO money in my pocket AT ALL. SO you can donate money to a rat rescue and feel good, AND you can get a leash to boot.

I got my harnesses yesterday.  My younger rats won't tolerate them (I kinda figured that might happen LOL) but it seems like the older ones may. 

Its a bit chilly and very windy this weekend, but as soon as it gets nice out I will take them outside and see how they like it!  Thanks BarbedDragon.

PS -- One comment... you need to make the knot on the end in the harness much bigger.  It came out very easily when I was trying to adjust the harness.  And I had a heckuva time getting it back through.  :)  Other than that, its great!  Thanks.

Yours was kinda the...well...first run. I think I'll be putting a pony bead on that so it doesn't happen again. Plus it'll be easier to pull.

My little guys don't tolorate it either. The older ones are pretty good about it. Goober....well he's just a blob of fat, nothing really bothers him.

Could you possibly post instructions (or PM them to me)?  These look interesting, and I'm just wondering from a construction standpoint how they compare to some other rat harnesses I've seen around.

I do take paypal. I actually prefer paypal :) I will take checks and Money orders, but checks will have to clear, and Money orders take time to get here. Not that I mind at all, but I'd rather get the harness out to you guys ASAP for your rats to enjoy :BlueDumboSmile:

 I do apologize, I will not post instructions or privately send them, as these are for rescue benefit. I'm not thinking that you would try to take the idea, but I did state in the first post I would not--and I can't make an exception to the policy :/ Otherwise I'm obliged to give them to everyone.

They are simple, but strong---and I have not found any problems (minus the one Lise had with the first run, which has been fixed) and my older guys and gals love them.

Also to add----I have given up on the rat beads. I have had 2 shipments not arrive yet and I have been waiting about 3 weeks or more. I'm really sorry to those who were looking forward to them. I'm trying to find another vendor at the moment. It was really hard to find these in the first place  :BlueDumboBigEyes:.

 I had one of these leashes quite a few years ago for my Sugar Glider. Of course, now we know leashes aren't good for SGs. But it was a great leash and I can see it working quite well for rats. I may order one or two..

Hey BD!  I'm really considering one for my little Munster face.  She's the only one I can't trust to stay in the designated play time areas without taking off and trying to hide.  I'm thinking this may be a good way, along with some num nums, to keep her on the bed long enough to realize that play time is fun and not so scary after all!  Think it would work for that purpose?  Are these pretty escape/slip proof?  It would be pretty sweet to be able to avoid the daily panic of "OMG WHERE DID LILY GO?!"

OMG I have got to get one. I sent you a PM Barbeddragon but I definatly want 1 to start them possibly more in different colors depenmding on what Selene wants each day.

Romp--They are slip proof as long as you have them decently snug. I haven't had anyone get out of them yet. However as with most things they are not chew proof. I am trying to work on one that is tho ;)

Skittles I will probably get a bright color, maybe a green since she is white and Stash will most likely get blue since she is so calm. Of course I have to get more money up first for 2 more.

Barbed..Selene is a jumper, main reason I wanted the leash so if she jumps from me I still have her.  Will she stay in the harness if she takes a leap of faith?

In my experience with using these harnesses, if the rats pull directly backwards they can easily pull out of them even when they are snug on the rat. 

They are great, but definitely shouldn't be exclusively trusted to contain a rat.

ahhhhh.....I hope since Selene is such a people rat she won't care about the harness, just the fact she goes with mommy.

Jumping is not suggested, but it should be OK as long as you catch her. I personally haven't had any problems with them, I did not know that the rats could get out, but as with any comfortable leash it does pose that issue. I'm sorry Lise I didn't know  :BlueDumboBigEyes: I guess my rats are just too lazy to try and get them off.... :doh:

 These are really made for walking around and as a security leash for when you have your rat out near people and on your person. Not reccomended for fearful rats.  :eek: Should not be used AT ALL unsupervised.


Lise let me know if you have anymore problems, I'll see if I can come up with something else more escape proof.

Haha, don't even worry about it!  My girls just hate being in any harness and wiggle and struggle until they are out (which actually doesn't take that long once they figured out they just have to pull out backwards).  Hence, they are no longer tortured by mommy putting them in the "evil" harness.

I'm not meaning to bash your product AT ALL, it is great!  I will probably order another more colorful one from you eventually.  Just didn't want people to think they are completely escape proof...  My mellow rats love being out in the harness and have never escaped.   :thumbsup2:

I'm sure it's not advised to jump but if she does I have a better chance of getting her with a lease then without. Selene and Stash love people, Skittles I am going to have to work with. She will probably only go on the leash in the house. She doesn't bite she just preferes to be left alone. I handle them everyday and Skittles still runs from me.

I wonder if it would be possible to add some type of 'padding' to the bottom of the harness? I used harnesses when I had my rats out places but I mainly used them as 'safety harnesses' in case one of the rats fell or tried to jump off me... I think these would be painful if they did jump and were stopped by the harness which is why I was wondering about the padding. I used to use a hamster harness for my girls because they were small enough that it fit them...

LOL OK guys I have updated the first page with pictures of the colors. When you order let me know if you want regular/color foil/iridescent color foil.

I'm working on a few different styles specifically for that reason and also for chewers, but I have been really busy lately with Frankie and everything else going on so its been hard to make mock ups.

I will definitely let you know what I come up with something new that works out in tests.

I got my harnesses and already had Selene on it. She didn't seem to mind and loved the free roam without me picking her up and placing her somewhere new.  She wouldn't sit still for a picture for me but when hubby gets home I am going to have him hold her while I take pics.  The leashes are awesomely wonderful.

I can't wait until you return from vacation! A few questions:

- I have four 6-mo old females - is there a reason babies don't tolerate the harness, or is there a way to help train them to accept it?
- What is the purpose of the beads? Is it okay if I prefer no beads?
- May I have a 15-foot leash? I want to sit in a protected area of the park and let them galavant around, just not too far.
- Do rats really let themselves be walked, like a dog does? Or does the rattie walk the owner?  :) If the owner really walks the rat, are there specific training techniques that help this?
- If you will give me the current web link to harness/leash colors, and let me know the prices for 15-foot leashes with no beads, and provide your address, I will likely have a check in the mail asap! Thank you for your great work!

Younger rats just tend to be less tolerant of new things, and have much more "fight" in them.  I have worked with my young girls inside the house with the harness since I got my harnesses a month? two months? ago and now finally I trust them enough to go outside. (Yay!)  Like anything else, it can take patience.  Or if you have a really mellow rat that nothing bothers, even if they are babies they may be totally fine with it. :)

You definitely cannot walk rats like a dog though.    As great as that would be. :cheeky:  In my experience the rats walk the owner.  They may follow you to a certain extent but definitely not like a dog.  Mine just like to go exploring wherever they please.

How much would shipping be to 30518?  I would love to get one of these.  I can't really tell what colors the cords are but anything close to purple or pink if you don't have purple and could you do like one of those little star beads, there's a clear one in the pic.  And then the rest of the beads I want alternating black and white, if you can't do the star just do the black and white.  This is a really great idea, btw.  Many of the rat harnesses I've seen either won't stay on or the ratties don't tolerate them.   :thumbsup2:

gwenlbzd--I can make a 15ft leash no beads. You must understand you have to be very careful in a "park" setting, as predators like hawks, cats, and even other prey driven creatures could snatch them up at a moments notice. I had a bad personal experiance with a ferret when I was lounging in the park w/ her and a dog without a leash ran up and grabbed her and flung her around. Thankfully she was ok and only broke a tooth, but from other wild animals it could be more severe.

As Lise stated babies can be less tolorant of things, then mellow out when they get older, but they do come in ALL flavors. Some will endure them and some wont. But normally if you keep trying with them, as in Lise's example then will eventually accept it if you try it with them little by little in sessions.

The colors I have are in the first post. I haven't run out of anything as of yet---but make sure you let me know which color so I cam make sure I have enough.

I'm the one who wants 15-foot leashes with no beads. Before I choose the leash type, I would prefer one without glitter or a metalic feel. Do you have "plain"? What is the leash material made of? And do they come with wrist handles? I would need to put a wrist handle on each ankle and each wrist, and lay out like a snow angel on the grass to let the four girlies gallivant and cavort.

Yay!  My leash arrived today!  Colby also got neutered today so it's kind of a consolation prize for him.  I put it on him and he did great (except for when I was tightening it and pinched his skin and made him squeak, sorry baby  :-[).  Didn't fight when I put it on and didn't try to get it off, just ran around exploring!  Here's a picture of him in it, he did lots of exploring but I couldn't get a good picture then because he was moving so fast!  We're going to practice inside for a while before we go outside, though it really did feel quite secure.  I will post more pictures when we go outside.  THANK YOU!

I'm sorry about that :( my hands is not what they used to be, I'm getting more pain in them. I normally tie a double knot  :doh: But I try to work on about 5-6 orders at a time so I might have slipped on that one. *make mental note to triple check EVERYTHING**

No problem!  It took about 20 seconds to fix.  Also, I wanted to say that I was surprised how well he did with it!  He's only three months old and quite a busy boy, but I had it on him and adjusted in about 45 seconds.  He wasn't bothering it at all once on.  Awesome!

Wow, this is wonderful, BarbedDragon, what you're doing!  Those harnesses are great.  I might consider buying one in the future, but I'm not sure if my boys, Ghost and Gizmo, would let me put it on them and if they would chew at it.  (They still don't even like to be picked up.)

You say you can make keychains too?  Do you have an example of one so I could see?  I might like one of those. ^_^  Are you able to put a rat bead on it?

Yep, I'm actually working on my first keychains tonight. I'll take a pic as soon as they are complete. I don't think we have had any chewing incidences *yet* but we all know its not impossible. I think if they are still iffy about being handled it's probably a good idea to wait and let them let you know how they will be. The harnesses aren't for every rat.

But the keychains are for every rat parent  :BlueDumboSmile: and I can put a rat bead on it.

I'm also working on a necklace which I will post too :)

Oh and guys, I finally bought a cheap toaster oven, so I might have FIMO creations soon as far as beads go.

I love the idea of this! After you let them explore outside, do you clean them off?  ??? Should I be worried about any bugs or sickness they might get from being outside?

Typically no, but I don't really take mine in ares where they would get into mold or "bugs" and mine are treated monthy with revolution so I don't really have too much to worry about there, but you could definitly use a "pet wipe" after they are done (that's how I clean mine up after they have had sweet potato treats).

I make sure they stay out of the fallen leaves (which is where you would pick up alot of things like that) and I personally haven't had any problems (cross my fingers).  :BlueDumboSmile:

Any harnesses I have shipped out are fine, you are in not danger of getting anything from what I have sent. I do take alot of precautions anyway when I make these (I only make them at work, not around my ratties and they never come into my house.)

SDA, Sendai, and Myco all have short lifespans outside of the body (3 hours at most) and all of you packages take much longer than that to be delivered.

The lab stated that even sending them now would be fine, however due to my own thoughts, I would rather not do anymore harnesses right now due to the time, and the stress and pain I am going through. Even if I cannot spread anything, I guess I would just rather be safe and decline to do so even if the experts say it is fine.

OK everyone has checked out clean and virus free per the bloodwork. SO. I think we just had a REALLY bad myco flairup, or Staphocochus inffection. The vet thinks it was this as well per the bloodwork and the fact they responded to the anitibiotics given. My crew is doing great, they are back to their oldselves.

So do these work better then the harnesses you can buy cause my ratties could wiggle right out of them!  I have a pic somewhere and it looks like my Nelix was in a colorful straight jacket!

In my opinion, the colorful ones that they sell in stores are night and day compared to the ones she makes. These are WAY easier to put on and keep on.

I would definitely be interested in 1 or 2 if you're still interested in doing them.  If you decide not to, any way I could convince you to share the pattern?  ;)

Hairpunk, they are not really for "spastic" rats that are terrified of harnesses in general, but when put on correctly they are tolorated well and seem harder to slip out of than the store bought things. Also easier to adjust.

I have been trying to contact BarbedDragon for a few weeks trying to get a few of these harnesses and have not heard back from her.  I realized today if you look at her profile she hasn't been on since February 18!!!   I tried sending her an email too, but haven't heard anything.  I hope everything is okay with her.  I also hope she is still making these, I am really interested since my boys all love going outside.

She never sent the prizes she offered for the HVRR raffle, either, or responded to PMs/emails about it.  I hope she's okay. :\

Ok guys let me explain a little bit as I have now gotten upsetting e-mails is the address I put on the top of this post.

I am working two jobs right now-- one is full time, one is semi full time. I work 15-18hrs a day and I have one day off a week. That's when I make harnesses and try to clean and keep myself semi sane. Its also time I try to cram in with my family.

I have not been on goosemoose for a very long time (or really much of anyplace for that matter) which is why I have not replied to PMs.

I HAVE however replied to all of the e-mail sent to Barbedwirecat@yahoo.com come as was directed in the first thread. I'm sory I didn't make it more apparent for everyone to contact me there as the email address I had to put one file in my profile I do not check. I have asked the mods to change it because either I or someone else used me e-mail address previously to sign up here and it blocked me from using it.

Please under stand I am not trying to ognore anyone, but really I have two jobs and no time on my hands (I am writing this at 4:45 AM BTW I woke up and randomly checked my e-mail). I have never minded making harnesses for people so I can support the rescues even if I have had to take them to work.

I will be shutting this down now because I do not want to feel like I am dissapointing anyone else. I may make a few pre-made ones so people know its something already made and they don't have to worry about not hearing from me.

Hey there everyone. I was wondering how well this product works, it looks GREAT but I have an adverturous boy who would be GONE if given the chance and I was wondering it anyone has had the problem wiht ratty escape artists  ;)

Typically they are fine for semi-adventurous ratties, bot not very well suited for jumpy rats or chewers. I say if the rattie can sit calmly on a shoulder without "spazzing" out then they would be fine. I would recommend some closely supervised time in a rat safe area indoors just in case so you can see how they re-act to the harness.
