Title: HVRR: 25 New Arrivals - Babies Galore - Michigan
Post by: Blackthorn on May 08, 2008, 08:47:11 PM
Today I traveled to the Toledo Humane Society and picked up 25 rats (8 adults, 17 babies) in danger of euthanasia.  The babies are all about 4 weeks old, and the adults range from approximately 3-6 months old (two males, six females).  The babies are all perky and in good shape - there are lots of hoodies/barebacks/cappeds in various colors (including mink, beige, black, agouti, and fawn).  The adults are in rough shape - they came from two separate cruelty cases originally, and several have nasty abcesses that will need treatment and other issues.  I will have more information on them ASAP.  If anyone is interested in adopting, please email huronvalleyrats@gmail.com.  I may be able to arrange transport, so please don't hesitate to ask.  Pics coming soon.

I'm in the 'burbs outside Chicago, IL and interested in just one female. How close could we get a baby to the Chicago area?

We could possibly set up a rattie train.  How far are you willing to drive?

Hrmm, I have a terrible sense of direction so I'd need to consult my husband, but I won't mind a couple of hours each way. I'm not sure how far you guys are.

I can certainly get as far as Kalamazoo, at the least. :)  Chicago is about 4 hours from me.

Well, when Blackthorn and I went to Wheaton, IL last year for the NIRO show, it took us around 5 hours or so.  If you're able to drive a couple hours, that's great and would help out a lot!

I'm going to have to get back to you as today at work I was startled to discover someone had left a female in with males. She's on pregnancy watch and if she's preggers, I may bring her home until the bubs are old enough.

Keep me in mind, I'll get back to you as soon as I can!

All these kiddos are still available, and I'd really like if some of them could get homes soon!  I also am having two young females returned to me (beige/fawn berkshires) because they are skittish and haven't come around fast enough for their adopter.  I'm sorry I don't have pictures yet of this batch. :\

How close are you to Valparaiso, IN?

Miranda, Valpo is about 3 and a half hours from us.

OK, I've just been checking through the adoption threads because I'm headed up to IN here in a few weeks. I can't adopt any for myself, because I'm flying. But my grandparents just retired and they have more time for pets now. They are great rat owners. They've had several rats in the past. So while I'm there I'm going to talk to them about adopting some ratties. :)

Actually, I just realized that they moved to Wheatfield. But I think that's still really close to Valpo. So, anyway, that will be a few weeks from now. But I'll keep this group of rats in mind when I'm talking to them about it. :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that 3 of the male babies died unexpectedly yesterday/last night at their foster home.  One had been showing some signs of URI the day before, and was supposed to go on meds today... I am going over to my foster to check the rest out tonight.   :-\

EDIT:  All babies were put on Zithromax as a precaution.  No one has shown any signs for the past couple of weeks.  They won't be available for adoption until I'm sure they're healthy.

EDIT:  As of 6/10, they are all doing very well... I may consider adopting a few of them out next week to prepared adopters if things continue to go well, only to those with proper quarantine available.
