Title: Isabelle ate a Hornet! Post by: ickybana5 on May 11, 2008, 11:46:47 AM Okay, I am sorry for all the posts lately, but my little ones seem to have a penchant for getting themselves in unusual situations...
Anyway, today Isabelle was free ranging and I looked over and she was eating something... always a cause for concern, so I went over to wrestle it away from her and discovered a half eaten hornet in her paws! I think it was already dead (and I have no idea how it got there, since I HATE those things with a passion and would never allow even a dead one to remain in my house) so she did not get stung, and she seems alright, but I was wondering if this has happened to anyone before, and what the outcome was? I already searched on google and in all the forums I am a member on, and there was nothing anywhere, so if anyone has anything at all to say, I would love to hear it. Thank you! P.S. the concern over megacolon in my last post turned out just to be a little bit of a blockage, probably from her meds, which cleared up as soon as I gave her a little more vegetables than her usual ration. I am giving her daily probiotic yogurt now and that seems to help. Plus, she is off her doxy as of two days ago, so things should clear up. Title: Re: Isabelle ate a Hornet! Post by: Marybelle on May 11, 2008, 01:02:58 PM I've never had any of mine eat a hornet, but they do catch and eat flies that get into their cages... Quite the little predators, our rats. I'd just keep an eye on her, but, since she didn't get stung, I imagine there's not a whole lot of danger to her. :)
Title: Re: Isabelle ate a Hornet! Post by: ratified on May 11, 2008, 01:07:45 PM I heard something about it being bad to feed rats wild insects b/c of parasites, hence I no longer (purposefully) let my rats eat random bugs. Don't know whether this is true or not. Never seen my rats eat a hornet, but I wouldn't put it past them. Blagh.
Title: Re: Isabelle ate a Hornet! Post by: NightmareWolfie1 on May 11, 2008, 06:06:47 PM Mine do disgusting things like this all the time.
I once found Nerv eating a slimy, wiggly earthworm. :yelcutelaugh: :icon_puke_r: I dunt think will be any problem at all. Mine also catch flies if they get near enough their cage. ::) Just keep an eye on her, at most she may get an upset tummy. Title: Re: Isabelle ate a Hornet! Post by: ickybana5 on May 11, 2008, 07:29:42 PM Thank you!
She is okay (Thank God!) and happy as ever. She slept in my pocket for a couple hours so I could keep an eye on her, but nothing ever happened. I love my little bug hunter! Title: Re: Isabelle ate a Hornet! Post by: kferber on May 11, 2008, 09:36:50 PM Why is it that we can't get our rats to eat all the good stuff we give them but they'll jump at eating nasty things? I thought rats were supposed to be afraid of new foods? Silly rats!
