Title: My two ratties
Post by: sweetersong on May 11, 2008, 03:46:17 PM
I have been a rat owner for about a month now.

My best friend had 2 rats (they are about 8-9 months old now) but she has become pregnant, and being on her own, she decided she couldn't give the rats the attention they deserved. I had been looking after them temporarily anyway, whilst she stayed at her mums for a few weeks, but instead of seeing her ratties go to a rescue centre, my husband and I decided we would take them in.

Thought I would introduce them

This is Jed, he is the more dominant rat, and because he is a pink eyed, he doesn't have as good sight, so he does sometimes mistake my finger for food, but he only does a nibble check now, so it doesn't hurt lol. Jed is the more cuddly rat, and likes to have a nap on my lap

This is Rex. He is more submissive when playing with Jed, and the sqeaker of the house. He is not as cuddly, but is very playful, and also loves grooming me.

Rex has a short tail now, because, for an unknown reason he hurt his tail, and in the morning (he was fine the previous eve) my husband noticed the skin on the end of his tail was hanging off. We took him to the vets and they had to amputate the bottom end of his tail.

What cute rats and very good of you to take them in rather than to a shelter!

They are both adorable! And Rex is very unique with his short tail! Do make sure they don't get overheated, since rats "Sweat" through their tails.

Thankyou, Yea we have to keep it quite cool in here, as we also have 2 guinea pigs, and two rabbits (the bunnies have their own room). Rex has the bandage off now, luckily I don't think he is pining after the rest of his tail lol.

After looking after them for a few weeks we couldn't bare the thought of not seeing them again (it is amazing how rats can grow on you), so we had to take them in. They live in their Freddy 2 in the living room so they always have lots of company.

What handsome boys!  And how great that you could save them from being rescue rats - luckly lil' guys.

They're cuties!  Jed looks like a BIG guy.  He looks like he's a ton of fun to snuggle.  Glad that they found their way to you and into your hearts

I acquired three that way - looked after them while the twins were in Bermuda.  When they went off to college, their mom said she wouldn't care for them  and they asked would I take one.  My response was "all three and don't you argue with me".

Beautiful boys. I love Jed's coloring.  Is Rex an agouti?  Looks like from the last photo...

Not sure if he is an agouti or a standard black. I know he is a berkshire as he has a white tummy.

Have to laugh though, as Rex got his name due to a mistake the pet store girl made when my friend was buying them. Jed is actually a Rex rat (figured with his odd curly hair) but the pet shop girl told my friend Rex was a Rex (hence his name)
