Title: Question for PEW owners
Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on May 30, 2008, 10:06:39 PM
I just got home from Texas and went to cuddle my girls and noticed they were pretty smelly (probably because they missed out on their weekly baby wipe wipe down)...so i decided id give them a quick bath which went great..i used scent free alch. free baby shampoo..very little...i think they enjoyed their mini spa treatment and im less sneezy when holding them :thumbsup2: ...well anyway my precious lady after her bath she was a bright white..i dried her off and put her on the couch to play and noticed about 10min later she had a light reddish hair around her neck like she was bleeding..i checked nothing....is this normal? what could it be??

That's porphyrin from when she was grooming herself.  It's normal to see a small amount of porphyrin around their nose when they first wake up.  She might have had a little bit more coming out from the stress of the bath, and when she was grooming herself afterwards she spread it onto her fur like that.

I don't have a PEW but my one rat, Riff, has alot of white fur and I can see the porphyrin staining sometimes too.

Yes, that's normal. It happens to my PEW, too.
