Title: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 01:53:56 AM Ok so my girls are too small for the FN right now..but im going to go ahead and order it but dont know when ill be able to pick up mesh...and mesh is EXPENSIVE to ship here for some reason...well anyway I have four girls and they are in a temp cage until their new temp cage comes in lol...i sold one RM and returned the other i HATE having two cages...well I ordered a cage through petco.com with my gift card after talking to a rep about the bar spacing..he said he was sure it wasnt over 1/2" spacing...well now that i get to looking at the picture it looks like an inch..too big...well i get it today..and if i have to return it im going to have to find another cage from Petco (im using a gift card which is why im stuck at petco) anybody have any suggestions for a petco.com cage thats ok for four girls...not to expensive as its a temp cage...and small bars?
ill find out today when i get the cage how far apart the bars are... hopefully ill get the mesh for the FN soon edit: in case anyone is wondering the cage i bought is the green one (http://www.petco.com/product/106066/PETCO-Multi-Level-Small-Animal-Habitats.aspx). Calculator says 5 rats..i have 4...figured it was ok as a temp cage until i get the mesh..i was assured it was no more than 1/2" but doesnt that look bigger than 1" to anybody else Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: julztoni97 on June 20, 2008, 05:58:05 AM I agree that the bar spacing is 1 inch on those cages. Super Pet makes a cage that has green levels with a green solid comfort wheel I've seen with 1/2 inch spacing. I'll see if I can find a link for you.
Edit : found it here is the link for it. I'm not sure that petco carries it though. It is a super pet deluxe critter cage. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753300 Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 06:04:59 AM the cage you linked is to small for 4 rats...and with the 12.5" depth i wouldnt put one in there :puppy_dog_eyes:
i hope when i get it by some surprise the guy is right and it is only 1/2"....or else its another cage ill have to return and just go elsewhere and spend cash..and let the gift card go to waste... i need to hurry up and get that mesh Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: julztoni97 on June 20, 2008, 06:07:09 AM I got rolls of mesh on sale at Ace Hardware. They were only $8 for each 3x5 roll. I haven't bought a cage that needs it yet but wanted it just in case while it was on sale. I figured if I had a couple rolls on hand it was a start.
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 06:10:25 AM well i know where im getting it from...Lowes has it really cheap..its just getting there..i should have picked some up when i was there last but i didnt have the money at the time...ill probably just harass my MIL to take me
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: julztoni97 on June 20, 2008, 06:13:56 AM Is it cheaper at Lowe's. I never go there for some reason. Home Depot is right across the street and I always end up there. I'll have to check out Lowe's for the price! Maybe I'll pick up some more and then I can get a FN too!
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 06:14:35 AM i dont remember how much it was...hold on ill go look again lol
This (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=90-000080032-HF20100423&bc=c) is what i was looking at...not sure if its metal or not though..i figured id stop in and check it out its the cheapest ive found so far Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: diabolique on June 20, 2008, 06:56:33 AM The SuperPet cage with the light green base definitely looks like 1 inch bar spacing to me. In the description, it mentions chins, ferrets, etc., but no "smaller" furry creatures like rats. I have a feeling you're going to be bummed out when you get it :(

I got the 5 foot rolls of coated metal ones at Ace. They have the green coating. That is a good deal for a 10' roll though if it is metal. I have a feeling you're going to be bummed out when you get it :( i have a feeling as well..but the guy told me over and over no more than 1/2" even called a supervisor who said it was...i dont know though...it would really help if they would put the bar space amount on the pages with dimensions...it would save a lot of trouble...if its an inch i have to ship it back and wait til they get it and send me a new gift card...i cant get to a petco for at least a month...and ill be stuck with bird cage temp cages until i order the fn oh and its not superpet its petco brand Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: jesirose on June 20, 2008, 08:26:44 AM It looks like 1/2 to me, because I don't think that actually is a piggie or anything IN there. It's added in a graphics program. I think that cage is 1/2. I could be wrong but if two employees said it was 1/2, it probably is.
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 08:52:21 AM it looks like a stuffed animal...but the thing is the guy looked it up couldnt find ANYWHERE that said what it was...called his supervisor and his supervisor said 1/4" no more than 1/2" and they guy said yea that looks right....i just called and talked to two different people both said they didnt know and had no way to find out

The boxes usually SAY on them, and they could find a ruler...sheesh. Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 01:08:25 PM it is 1" and two of my girls slip easily through it...my two bigger girls havent really tried... every cage petco has is with correct spacing is too small for the girls...the ones perfect for them they slip out...i give up...im just going to get the mesh ASAP and order the FN ...
btw the cage is CRAP ...the shelves are horrible and the clips break easily..most were broken when i got the package..but the size is nice...guess ill return it and use the gift card for something else Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: julztoni97 on June 20, 2008, 01:35:03 PM That's too bad!
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 02:13:34 PM so here is what i have the cage as right now...
(http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/wnjordan/cage-3.png) (http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/wnjordan/cage2-3.png) (http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/wnjordan/cage3-3.png) no liners made yet..ill do them later...i hate the shelves and i hate the way the door is secured...but i love the size...so ive decided just to mesh this cage and fix the doors and use this for a bit instead of shelling out more money and more time and frustration...the girls seem like they dont mind getting out much anymore now they have their stuff...so we will see.... Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: MiniMuffin on June 20, 2008, 04:04:21 PM If you're going to mesh this one, why not just mesh the FN and return the green one? I guess I'm a little confused.
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 06:38:25 PM because im tired of dealing with shipping and im tired of dealing with cages...so ive decided to just keep this one for a couple months...and dealing with petco.com's returns is a pain in the butt...
i may get one in a couple months but itll be from a store as Im done with shipping....but maybe in a couple months CN will be out..all and all its my decision on if i want FN or not and right now i dont want to deal with it...the girls are fine where they are and thats all that matters and id rather not be bombarded with posts about why not the fn why not the fn why not the fn.... Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: MiniMuffin on June 20, 2008, 06:41:41 PM I was just confused, since the initial problem seemed to be you not wanting to mesh a cage. That's all.
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 20, 2008, 06:48:24 PM i dont have a problem meshing a cage...its just i have to find a way to get to the store...which if was really needed i can do..but better off just keeping them in this cage for a little while and hope the CN comes out...or wait a couple months for the girls to fatten up where their little tushys cant squeeze through...if i keep this cage and let them grow..itll be a great cage for if i have to go away they can visit the neighbors in it...cant do that with the FN...oh and incase someone is wondering why theyd have to go to the neighbors its because we only own one set of house keys and i refuse to allow anybody my only set...and my landlord (MIL) has a set but she wont care for the rats and wouldnt be happy with us giving out keys for her apartment building
Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: Myrhme on June 21, 2008, 12:12:46 AM ...i sold one RM and returned the other i HATE having two cages...well I ordered a cage through petco.com with my gift card after talking to a rep about the bar spacing..he said he was sure it wasn't over 1/2" spacing...well now that i get to looking at the picture it looks like an inch..too big...well i get it today..and if i have to return it I'm going to have to find another cage from Petco (im using a gift card which is why im stuck at petco) anybody have any suggestions for a petco.com cage thats ok for four girls...not to expensive as its a temp cage...and small bars? When you say "RM", do you mean Rat Manor from Petco? What didn't you like about it? I'm wondering because I was thinking of getting that cage. The bars spaces are 1/2" and I like the fact that it is collapsible, since I only need it as a backup cage, and it will be stored most of the time. What I don't like about it is that the shelves are wimpy and don't look like they'll hold up very well. I also wonder about a metal pan. Will it rust when the paint scratches off? The Martins looks really high quality, but I don't have any idea if it's collapsible. Does anyone here know? Also, I'm not sure if the shipping costs are outrageous. At least with Petco, there's no shipping. Title: Re: Need some cage help Post by: ~*ChaoticSerenity*~ on June 21, 2008, 12:35:39 AM the shelves held up for me pretty good..but the pan scratches easy...VERY small doors and my girls were able to push them open as the clasps wear out after awhile...i kept having to bend them to keep it locked and it was too small for my 4 girls...but other than that it was good
i dont think the martins is collapsable but ive never had one... this new cage (cheaper and bigger than the RM but 1" bars) at first i hated it..but now that im messing with it..ive fallen in love...and my girls arent trying to get out anymore (although they wont be in there without supervision for awhile)...and it is so easy to clean!! and its HUGE! ive decided to just hold off on the FN because of how attached to this cage ive already became plus its collapsable and can be transported easily..i cant wait to order everything for it! the doors (top and front) are HUGE but a bit of a pain to open and close...i dont like the clasps but i will be fixing them |
