Title: Lazy in their new hammock >.>
Post by: Moghedian on June 23, 2008, 09:23:36 PM
So I bought my rats a real hammock because it clips to the top of my cage and looks alot comfier than the ratty one I made before ;D

But now, my 2 girls just sleep all day.  I never hear them active at night that much either.

They're gonna get fat XD

I do make sure that they get to run around my couch and area for at least an hour or so, so i'm not too worried, but is this lazyness normal?

Wow, what a great hammock! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it?

I got them at Petco and they were only 13 bux before taxes.  They have metal clips too it's really handy and suprisingly cheap ;D <3

Okay...honestly...I hate those hammocks for several reasons.  First being that they are godawful expensive for something those precious little rodents of yours are just going to munch to pieces.  Plus those metal clips in the dryer are really, really loud, and they look really sturdy but they aren't.

If you are concerned about the look of your hammocks, like the rest of us masochists you can either learn to make your own, or you can spend your money a bit more wisely and order from Scubbs or Dearpie or Wonderrodent or any of the others that you can find on here.

oh I know my money could have gone to better uses.  It was out of town shopping trip with my mom because I dont see her as often now that I have moved out.  My washer is noisy anyway, and they havent chewed it yet, it's really strange.

And links to those websites would be cool?  I feel really ripped off now D;

Those are all users on this site, if you go to the swap area you can find their posts :)

I have a similar one to that and my clips broke off the first time in the wash. I still use it because my girls did NOT chew it, and I just use a safety pin to hold it up.

I also got lots of stuff from Scubbs A++++++.

I agree. I make my own and honestly don't really care what they look like. I'm not paying a ton of money for a hammock.

Your cage doesn't look like there is something that can make them more active though :(

Ahh I was waiting for that.

that black thing is a cardboard level that I made for them covered in fabric.  The cage is 36inches high by 18 wide and 18 long.

I have that big rope running all up it, several ladders, and bird perches that came with it.  Plus, we are always pulling them out to let them run around everywhere to encourage the excersize. :)

awww, road and katara :D

My ratties like my old t-shirt just fine, haha.
Do they like that ropey thing? I was thinking of buying one, but once I realized you were going to probably buy one, I decided to wait and see what your rats thought of it, haha.

haha, I don't need to encourage exercise with my little guys. I'm just glad I'm not a light sleeper... they're in my closet and i can still hear them! haha. which reminds me. I've been seriously debating buying them a wheel. But I"m not sure how I would go abotu showing htem how to use it. And I don't want to spend the money if they won't use it.. I am saving up for my next year of university :S

I didn't need to show my boys how to use their wheel. I put it in there and they just kind of figured it out. Now, I hear it all night long!

My girls didn't get it at first, the older two didn't have a wheel when I got them. One of the younger ones got in and showed them. I think they would have figured it out before too long :)

When I bought my boys their new Martins cage a few months back, I decided to splurge on 2 new hammocks for them from Martins.  They were $10 a piece.  I decided since they don't seem to be chewers I wanted to give them something more comfortable looking than old dish towels and burp clothes that I have been using for so long.  They have had their new hammocks for quite a while now and have done nothing to them but sleep in them.  I am just constantly switching the 2 of them out with each other.  Today I am cleaning the cage, I will put the clean hammock in and immediately wash the dirty one.  They LOVE their hammocks!!  I so think they were worth the money since the boys use them constantly.

Maybe you could give them some interactive toys, such as multiple treats strung on a rope.  Its decorative, and a toy.  Also, my girls LOVE those plastic eggs empty or with a treat inside.

Outside of the cage you could try a digging box with sterile unfertilized soil, or pea-fishing.

I would also try a wheel, they may try it.
Good Luck!

So far not a single chew, so this hammock, in my opinion is worth it.

and pea fishing is something I am really going to have to get around to trying ;D

and to Troter, my rats climb the rope to get into the hammock most of the time.  I've seen Katara(hairless) do flips off of it onto the corner hammock I have there too a few times though.

Your girls look very comfortable in their hammock! I'm a total hammock nut, and I couldn't afford to keep buying store ones for them to destroy so I taught myself how to use the machine we have and started making my own. I save a ton of money, and can get the sizes and colors that I want.

Chelsey makes WONDERFUL hammocks, btw ;)

You can use my sewing machine if you make me one too :D

My poor boys, I use an old shirt for a hammock, and I only have one (and i JUST threw out/donated alot of old ones a few months ago  ), and yesterday I took it out to wash... they were most definately NOT impressed.

PM me where you live if you want.  I'm moving and my husband and I each have a sewing machine.  We really do need to get rid of one.  If you live near Los Angeles lets talk!!
