Title: Cut on underbelly of my new boy D: (Pic)
Post by: Rmv1983 on June 25, 2008, 09:24:51 AM
I took one of my new boys out this morning to look at his underbelly, only to find part of his belly coated in red. I thought at first he may have fallen asleep on a strawberry, but with my moms help we cleaned the area, only to notice skin missing. The area was cleaned with soap and water, and an antibiotic cream was put on it. I think the would is fresh, as there was blood in their pvc tube (which was removed). I have no idea how he could have done this, there is nothing sharp in his cage. I just got him yesterday from the humane society, so I am not sure how he gets on with his brother, but it didn't look like a bite wound to me. I do not think he came home like this, but I cannot be 100% certain. I checked his underbelly yesterday, and both he and his brother were fine. Unless I checked the same rat twice, which is also a possibility (I still have trouble telling them apart  :cheeky:). My question is at this point is how to treat the wound? Does he require antibiotics from the vet? I am not sure he requires vet care at this point, the cut does not appear that deep, and he is acting normally as far as I can tell. I'm still not cure on male rat behaviors...but he is sleeping...constantly sleeping  ::)

Thanks in advance!

Rats heal freakishly fast when it comes to wounds and cuts...if he's leaving it alone and acting normally, I'd check him again later and tomorrow, just to make sure it doesn't look inflamed or infected.  My guess is by tomorrow or the next day, it will be completely closed.

Poor guy! It should heal OK on its own... just keep an eye on it. :)

Keep an eye on it. If it feels hot, turns red, or starts having discharge you will want to see about antibiotics. But what you did already was good!  :thumbsup2: Like everyone else said...most likely it will heal up quickly with no problems.

Thanks everyone. I will just keep the area clean and keep applying antiboitic cream to it. :) Makes me feel better to know he should be okay
These boys have given me more trouble in two days than my girls have in six months  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:
