Title: Cube cage? Post by: Gin on June 26, 2008, 01:36:10 PM I've seen a few cages made out of those mesh like panels that you use to make storage areas and was wondering if those actually make decent cages. I know the guinea pig people use them for their cages, but will it be okay for rats? If you have any photos, I'd love to look at them. My rats have a nice roomy cage already, but I'd like something that I could add onto and isn't very expensive.
Thanks in advance! Title: Re: Cube cage? Post by: pyrostorms on June 26, 2008, 02:55:21 PM i think these cube cages work great. but it depends on who you are. like my cage has no wheels(i hope to add some) and it is very heavy which people dont like but i dont really move it and i can slide it easily if i need to clean behind it.
the spacing can be a problem unless you get the mesh type, but i have heard it is really hard to find the mesh type panels i have looked at several stores around here and im not willing to drive across the state just to get it. but the square panels i have i think have bars that run vertical and horizontal with 1in spacing. i think that is risky as alot of people dont like the spacing but you could always put hardware cloth on the panels and just use the zip tie the panels together instead of using the knobs that come with the set. i love the fact you can make it how you want. i messed up the first time becuase i only made two panels that would open on my cage which was 2 panels high, 3 panels wide and 1 panel deep. my cage was kinda weird but it was like two "L"'s, both on side and arranged were when both put togeather it would make a rectangle (http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j93/pyrostorms/PICT0145-1.jpg) (http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j93/pyrostorms/PICT0144.jpg) and only 2 panels would open as doors which was horrible when i wanted to clean the cage or hang up stuffness in the cage. but i tookapart the cage and made a new one but i have yet to take pictures but if you really need pictures if you do plan on getting the cubes just message me and i will get them i hope this helped at least a bit. Title: Re: Cube cage? Post by: wickedrodent on June 26, 2008, 03:52:28 PM I would assume mesh would be great for all ages and genders of rats. I personally love the way you can rearrange them and make new things. I have used them for guinea pigs, in the past, but not for rats.
Title: Re: Cube cage? Post by: RatAttack59 on June 27, 2008, 09:24:16 PM I've used them for the bunnies, but some of my smaller rats could walk through those squares no problem. The mesh panels might work but they are pretty opaque and you lose ventilation (or maybe there's yet a third type - the "mesh" I have is realy a translucent solid, not really a mesh, and in either case my guys would eat right through them).
