Title: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: jesirose on July 01, 2008, 01:36:34 AM Yay or nay?
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: P3 on July 01, 2008, 01:42:01 AM From what I remember... the seeds are carcinogenic.
Don't quote me though Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: jesirose on July 01, 2008, 01:46:50 AM It was so hard not to hit the quote button :)
I am glad I asked, just in case. I just thought maybe I didn't have to toss out the core. Can anything use it? Is it good for anything? We don't compost or anything tho. Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: P3 on July 01, 2008, 01:52:26 AM Hahaha ;D stinker
Umm other than compost, I can't think of anything. I mean I'm sure you could smear it with peanut butter, sprinkle it with birdseed and hang it up in a tree (the pb might not stick). I'm sure some wild animal will eat it. What that wild animal would be... I have no clue :yelcutelaugh: Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: jesirose on July 01, 2008, 01:55:49 AM That sounds good but all of our neighbors hate the birds lol. I don't want to piss them off by attracting more. (I dunno what kind they are but they are LOUD in the early AM.)
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: Suebee on July 01, 2008, 11:14:24 AM Yeah apple seeds BAD. I swore they were more than just carcinogenic, but I can't find the info in my stuff. For some reason, word association makes my brain go "apples seeds = cyanide."
Your neighbors would HATE me... I'm the resident bird feeder around here... we have mallards that hang around, too... I love to feed "my" ducks. LOL! Sometimes, early in the morning, they sit out there, quacking away. Honestly, I love to wake up to that sound. ;D Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: jesirose on July 01, 2008, 11:21:26 AM So it's just the seeds right? Can I give them apple slices?
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: ScoutGotBig on July 01, 2008, 11:27:45 AM Apple slices are fine. Apple cores - no good. It's actually the seeds, they have cyanide in them.
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: Suebee on July 01, 2008, 11:35:41 AM Yep, slices are fine! ;D :thumbsup2:
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: jesirose on July 01, 2008, 11:41:48 AM Thanks guys! :)
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: Marybelle on July 01, 2008, 01:07:08 PM In fact, if you take out the seeds, you could give them the core. :)
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: jesirose on July 01, 2008, 01:18:46 PM In fact, if you take out the seeds, you could give them the core. :) Really? Clever. I'd worry I'd forget one though. I'll just toss it, we don't get apples that often so it's no biggie.Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: Marybelle on July 01, 2008, 02:05:18 PM If it were me, I'd just cut out the middle bit with the seeds, and give them the rest of it. ;)
Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: JR1030 on July 01, 2008, 02:57:35 PM Is it cyanide or arsenic? ???
Ah, just looked it up. It's a version of cyanide, which is also in cherry and peach pits, among others. Don't give your rats seeds or pits from anything, I'd say, to be on the safe side. Title: Re: Apple Core - Can they eat it? Post by: italianqt on July 01, 2008, 07:38:10 PM Yeah that seems to be another of those things that falls under the "if you won't eat it, don't give it to them".
