Title: Looking for simple patterns for hammocks to try
Post by: diabolique on July 01, 2008, 03:00:56 PM
Hello, everyone --

First of all, those of you who sell hammocks and such don't need to worry about me trying to edge in on the market! I don't have the time to sew and sell, this is mostly about me trying to find a new hobby.  :)

I bought a new sewing machine that is supposed to be good for beginners. I have not used a sewing machine since 7th grade (and I'm now 38), but I would like to try to learn to make simple things like hammocks for my ratties. I will quite likely still be buying hammocks from time to time, but I am hoping someone might be able to give me some tips on how to make a simple hammock, or a wide tube-like hammock (open on both ends). Theoretically, I should just be able to just look at the ones I have and figure it out, but I tend to do better if I have some directions to work with.  Keep in mind, I am a rookie sewer, so I want to start out slow and simple so that I don't get discouraged.

Can anyone help me? Or, has anyone found good websites that have simple patterns?

Thanks!

*goes to pull new machine out of box so as to ooooh and aaaah before I break it*

I would love some patterns too! I can crochet hammocks but Im useless with a sewing machine.  :yelcutelaugh: I would probably have to get a new sewing machine too, mine is seriously over 50years old (my grandmothers) and HORRIBLY heavy.

Thanks, britters! If you come across the other site, could you please post it for me?

I'm also going to do some more searching to see if I can come up with how-to pictures or patterns with measurements or something.

What I do is just cut a big square piece of fabric, poke a hole in each corner, stick string through the holes, and tie it up.

No sewing required! It is super easy and quick to do.

If you want to start simple, just cut two squares, sew them together, then turn them inside out so no seams show. It's actually pretty easy! You can go buy tools for attaching grommets and then use key rings and lanyard snaps to attach them to the cage. If you want to get a little more complicated, just cut another square that same size in half, add it on top, and make it a pocket hammie!
