Title: Puffy/Swollen Eye, Advice Needed *UPDATE, a turn for the worse*
Post by: vw_veggie on July 16, 2008, 12:39:00 AM
I have a spayed female Dumbo rat who is 1 year and 5 months. She has had chronic respiratory problems, and has been seen by a terrific vet. The problem now is that her left eye is a bit swollen or puffy. I don't know if that is a symptom of respiratory problems or something worse. There is a little discharge, the color brown ( Not sure the technical name). She is alert, activity level normal, and is eating very well. Any advice would be very helpful, and she is also on variety of vitamins to help her respiratory problems.

*UPDATE*
Moira was seen by a vet, and had her top teeth trimmed and was put on Baytril. Within a few days her puffiness decreased. She is now very unsteady on her feet, she falls on her side when she sneezes or shakes too hard and her body feels tight as if her muscles have tensed up. If anyone has experienced this please leave a post with information on the diagnoses of your rat. Regardless, I will be calling her vet in the morning for more information on her condition.

My first thought was she may have a sinus infection pressing the eye out, making it bulge. It's definitely something you want to take her to the vet for. If she's not able to close the eye, you'll want to call your vet before you even go in to find out what you can use to keep her eye from drying out.

Moi is able to close her eye when she needs to. It looks less swollen this morning than it did last night. Would sneezing or a runny nose be involved with the sinus infection? She has no visable fluid around her nose.

Definitely need to get her into the vet ASAP.  Hopefully they have an appointment available for you today!  Good luck  :)
