Title: Do female rats go through menopause? + Pregnant rat questions
Post by: ScabbersandYoda on July 20, 2008, 01:41:29 AM
Okay, so... I got a rescue rat who was kept with a male for a few days before I got her. She's supposedly 2 although she seems in perfect health and doesn't look old/like she's on her way out. If she's pregnant she'll be due within a week give or take a few days.. shes got a bit of a belly but nothing that would make me confirm a pregnancy. So, do older rats go through menopause? just some ? anyone had experience with an older pregnant rat? any info greatly appreciated  :help:

Well, apparently due to some googling all mammals can go through menopause. I hope this is the case as I worry she's too old to handle a litter. I don;t know if this is her first or not.

well not menopause as such, but can become infertile in old age

I would be very careful, I am pretty sure it was on this board a few years ago that someone thought their girl had gone through menopause at almost 3 and put her in with an old male, needless to say she fell pregnant and while she delivered ok she passed away when they were 2/3 weeks old.

I think it's hard to say when a rat becomes infertile and I bet it varies from rat to rat. A pregnancy on an older rat is pretty strenuous.
