Friend's Rat with Tumor Needs New Home (Texas)
«

I am posting for a friend who doesn't have the internet. He has a blue self female rat that has came up with a tumor. He can't afford to take her to the vet right now, and wants me to take her in. I myself can't afford her vet care either because we just spent all our emergancy vet money (over $500) on our dog that got hit by a car. Anyway, she's a sweet, beautiful girl, that deserves a home that can get her to the vet so she can lead a good life. He says the tumor is a little larger then a pea. Please, if your anywhere close to Dallas, and can afford to take her in and to a vet please email or PM me. I don't what to see her PTS, because shes still young and active.

You can still "probably" afford vet care. It may be a ways from where you live, but there is a vet in Carrolton (North Dallas) who will do any surgery (spay/neuter/tumors/etc) on a rat for $35. However, with a "tumor" the size of a pea, it's more likely it's a cyst or an abscess rather than a tumor, unless it's literally only been there a very short time. If you want her contact info just PM me or e-mail me.
If you can't do that, contact the Rat Association and see if they might be able to foster the rat and help with surgery. You can reach the Rescue Coordinator at

if this tumor is this small, then it was caught early and she has a good chance of recovery - and if sarah's vet recommendation will do surgery for only 35 dollars, then this is SUCH a reasonable price that i see no reason to not check it out and take them up on it ... sounds like the best possible outcome i can think of? can the owner afford 35 bucks for the rat, or can you loan it to them?

I am soon to have her in my care, because he wants her PTS. I think she would make someone a wonderful pet, and I hate to see that happened.
It seems the lump is growing, and 4 days after it first appeared, he says its almost the size of a marble. I want to see this girl live, and its looking like I am going to have to take her to the vet myself so she can.

Well, I picked her up today, and as soon as I got her home, she cut her "tumor" open on the edge of her cages water bottle holder. Alot of puss started to come out, so I let it drain all out, and I cleaned it with peroxide. It apparently wasn't a tumor like he thought.

Shes doing great. My cat and dog vet gave me a cream to put on it to kill any infection, and bacteria. Shes super active, and bounces all around the cage. I think she may be a keeper. As soon as she comes out of the cage, she starts to clean me.Shes such a sweet girl. I think Chris is hinting that he wants her back, but NO WAY! Shes all mine now!

Good for you. When he was in trouble and facing a vet bill he got rid of her, if it had been a tumor and you had paid to have it fixed would he have wanted her back then?
If he had taken her to the vet in the first place they could have treated the absess to beging with.
