(added pic)sorry - question about abnormal poops
«
on:
August 10, 2003, 03:16:59 PM »
My rat was sick with respiratory problems and diarrhea. She was on bayril. Now the diarrhea is gone but she only makes 2-4 poops a day and they are all over an inch long. Does anyone know what is causing this?

In my experience of baytril, it CAUSES diarrhea! But I see no reason why it wouldn't affect poo in other ways too.

Are they grayish or whitish in color? Or the normal "rat raisin brown"?

It looks like a fairly normal poo to me. Wuite a few times, my kids have poo like that. It's probably just her intestines way of adjusting to the post-baytril period.

This might sound nasssssty but... from my knowledge of human biology... if she had diarreah long enough, her bowel/colon may have gotten used to being "unused" per se... not having to "push" to go... thus the long poos... in a few days/weekish the muscles should be back in order and smaller forms start to appear...
Keep an eye on it ;)

Looks like pretty normal poo's to me also, I have three guys and depending on what and the amount they have eaten depends on the size of the poo...and the older they get..the bigger the ..well you get the idea.

thanx PrairieFire, in spite of all I've heard, and how it makes me feel better, I've never seen one like this, and your explanation is no more graphic than my pic

(whoops, clicked enter without finishing)
I feel weird posting the pic too, but it's all in the interests of health, right?
That explanation makes total sense to me, and I feel better. Thankyou

My guys have poops like that sometimes. It makes you wonder how something so small could produce something that big.
You could try giving her lactobacillus acidophilus (the active bacteria in yogurt) or yogurt to help restore the good bacteria in her intestines. I give my kids acidophilus whenever they are on antibiotics to help their digestive systems and curb the diarrhea. It should be given 2 hours before or after antibiotics so that it doesn't diminish the antibiotic's affects.
