baytril often works most effectively if given in conjunction with a medication like doxycycline -- ask the vet about using that combination -- in the reference desk you can find links for the drug charts that you could print out.
some people have used baytril long term - i dont like to. he may just need a combo though, that is when its most effective :
from the drug chart:
http://www.rmca.org/Articles/dchart.htm"Bactericidal, broad-spectrum antibiotic once touted as being the miracle drug for mycoplasma, but we've found that using the recommended dose, symptoms return very soon after ending treatment (although some rat owners report having excellent results). Better results have been achieved using much higher doses (as shown). Use in combination with Doxycycline for best results. Injectable form tastes horrible and must be mixed with something to make it palatable. Can also be nebulized. Relatively expensive. Prescription needed."
and he might also want to look into a longer lasting combination.
if the rat needs to gain weight, feed him ANYTHING he is interested in eating -- human foods, baby food, ensure/boost (those nutritional drinks), anything and everything he will eat, not just rat food.
and speaking of rat food, what are you feeding him as a base diet?
