I adopted 2 male hooded rats (Siblings) and they are now 1.5 yrs old. One is very ill and has been to a vet 3 times already the first time he was very congested and had stopped eating and drank very little and was loosing some weight so the vet put him on Chloramphenicol which seemed to ease the symptoms but gave him soft stools but we kept up with it and I made sure to keep up his fluid intake.
He took this for 10 days he still was not better after this so we went back to the vet and he then put him on Baytril as I requested it from some of the articles I have been reading he prescribed him 0.05 mg rubbed on the inside of his ear and this worked well he was eating again and drinking and the symptoms went away and he could breath freely again but he is still on the skinny side.
Well those meds were finished last Sat and the symptoms have returned I am going to contact the vet today and get more but is this a med that can be used long term?
Or should I be doing something else?
What should I give him to gain weight (Tried nutri-cal he hated it)?

Need as much info as you can give me?HuhHuh
Thanx in advance

baytril often works most effectively if given in conjunction with a medication like doxycycline -- ask the vet about using that combination -- in the reference desk you can find links for the drug charts that you could print out.
some people have used baytril long term - i dont like to. he may just need a combo though, that is when its most effective :

from the drug chart: http://www.rmca.org/Articles/dchart.htm

"Bactericidal, broad-spectrum antibiotic once touted as being the miracle drug for mycoplasma, but we've found that using the recommended dose, symptoms return very soon after ending treatment (although some rat owners report having excellent results). Better results have been achieved using much higher doses (as shown). Use in combination with Doxycycline for best results. Injectable form tastes horrible and must be mixed with something to make it palatable. Can also be nebulized. Relatively expensive. Prescription needed."

and he might also want to look into a longer lasting combination.

if the rat needs to gain weight, feed him ANYTHING he is interested in eating -- human foods, baby food, ensure/boost (those nutritional drinks), anything and everything he will eat, not just rat food.

and speaking of rat food, what are you feeding him as a base diet?

The baby food is such a good idea because they just lick.....not chew.....thus in turn helps save their breath. They dont have to work hard to chew and breathe at the same time.

Good advice......and it works. I went through it plenty of times!

Have you looked at the helpful information page from the Rat Fan club?  You can find it via the Reference Desk in the Internet Resources ..... there's a great section on diet, what they need and also a list of forbidden foods.  Quite a few of us make our own mixture, based upon Suebee's mix.  (Disclaimer, the recipe is not endorsed by the board, as Deb D has her own 'recipe'.)  You can find suebee's mix at :  www.ratsrule.com.

I hope you get your baby some better food today, I'm sure she's pretty hungry, if she's not eating much.  Also, my rats get plenty of our leftovers, along with a variety of fruits and veggies ...  Smiley
