If they're going to be babies, a 10 gallon will work for a week or two. But you really want to get them a proper cage ASAP. Once you've got a proper cage, the 10 gal may be handy in the future as a quarantine or hospital tank. I have a 20 gallon (long) tank which I use for intros, and I just finished cleaning it. It is big, heavy, and the biggest pain in the butt! Spend the money on the real cage, not the temporary one.

If you don't have the 20 gallon long aquarium yet, it would be best just to buy a cage. Around here a 20L is about $40-50, and I got my Martin's R-670 for about $60 (including shipping). So, it would be cheaper in the long run to get a proper cage now. Also, I don't mean to be rude, but if you "don't really feel like getting a cage" right now maybe you should wait to get your rats?

It sounds like a 20-gal would be good for the two babies at the moment (we're talking same-sex babies here, right?). Also, you might be interested in this link which has some dimensions (in volume recommended per rat) for rat homes on it. There used to be a "cage calculator" somewhere on the site, too--if you look around the whole site you'll find a great deal of useful info.

Good luck with the new kids! Enjoy! Do you intend to get boys or girls?

if the cage company wants to come localy than i will buy one
unless they do i aint gonna get one of those cages right now
for some reason nothing comes down here
and when something does
(like jazzland which is like sixflags) they usualy plan stupidly and spend all money (jazzland is closing after only 2 years open)

Well I doubt Martin is going to visit you anytime soon, but if you still want a good cage you should order one of his. Am I the only one who didn't understand the jazzland part?

Martin's Cages (family name, not a guy named Martin) is mail-order only. So there's NO chance of them coming to your town. Personally, I think they are totally worth every penny.
We're giving you the best advice we can, based on YEARS of collective experience and product testing by our 300 members. Sorry it's not good enough.

Ididn't even think about the cage and the aquarium being close in price! Of course you guys are right.
radzer0, the companies
will
come to you! Many people on this forum buy their cages online; the cages are then shipped to you, and you assemble it at home (Joe had a good tip about putting one together with zip-ties first so that if you get it wrong, you can just cut them off and restart). (Hey--how about twist ties?)

Maybe as they become much bigger, they will. However, it costs a lot to maintain many facilities. Martin's is still a rather small family-owned company. I own three Martin's cages and wouldn't recommend any other.

Well then, I would go with a cage rather than an aquarium - like I've said before, it is a huge pain to clean my 20L - it's heavy and I'm always scratching up my tub or sink washing it out.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but Martin's are shipped quite nicely, and if they do get damaged by chance, they will replace it. They are a very reputable company -- the best, in my opinion.
If you can't or won't order one through the mail, then PLEASE just go to the store and look for a coated wire cage.

I couldn't agree more. They are a very small, VERY excellent family-owned company that can only afford one facility. Their operation works flawlessly -- they are fast, efficient, and very personal. I have never heard anyone so critical of them without even ordering from them.
To be honest, I am done with this thread...

I think most companies would replace anything broken en route to you..I really think everyone here is politely suggesting that a martins cage or something similar is the most basic piece of equipment your rat will ever have. It is essential to have the right one, they are expensive but will last forever. If martins really isn't an option then maybe you need to really look around for a good alternative (not a tank in my opinion..poor ventilation) Have a look at the martins cages online then at least you have a gold standard to compare anything else to.

That is fine that you are unhappy with UPS. Martin's ships using Fed Ex. Get a feel for what kind of cage you want and the money you are willing to spend. Keeping in mind that petstore cages will be more expensive, and can be lesser quality.

I have a suggestion. I just got a really good cage for my rat, it's a wire cage that comes apart (god since I move every fall and spring) and the litter pan can be easily placed in the cage so that makes cleaning a little easier for me and I just don't want my rat to be running around on wire. It's called a perfect pet home, and it's sold at Kmart, I got it for 28 but it was 40 cause their going out of buissness. It's a good travel cage for me and I can put levels on it because it is tall. Bit I agree spend money on the cage and not the temporary one, it's well worth it.

Wow, if ordering a cage is so much trouble, maybe you shouldn't get rats at all.

Nobody cares where you get your cage! You are the one that asked, and if you don't want a Martins cage , dont get one. a cage is just a much better investment than a tank, plus powder coated is much better than galvanized, and a drop in pan is much better than the drawers that slide out. Hopefully your pet store has one like that, so you don't have to wait a week, because that would be awful.
