I was wondering if I was the only person that noticed that pet store staff are pretty "un-educated " and say things like PINE IS GOOD . or TWO MALE RATS WILL FIGHT > they make me so mad and I would show them how much they don't know but they only say that stuff or stupid stuff around for the small pets .

Honestly... PetsMart is the only pet store I will set foot in. They're about an 8... room for improvement, but marginally acceptable. They use decent bedding, OK food, only carry one sex, and the staff has a passing knowledge. Still, I have other sources for rats... they won't get my business in the adoption/purchase department. In fact, if my supermarket sold Nutro and CareFresh, I wouldn't need to set foot in there at all, and that would be fine by me.

I can't comment on the others in my area, because I refuse to set foot in them... mixed sexes, small cages, wrong bedding, wrong food... apalling. *shudder*

There are petstores around me that are bad, then there are others who are worse Tongue Petco of course is crap. Then there are mom and pop stores that makes me absolutely sick. I'll order all my supplies from online thank you, I refuse to give any of them my money. If there was a Petsmart near here I might shop there, but there isn't any close by.

my local petsmart gets a 9
of course, it would have probably only been an 8 but i whipped some people into better habits when i worked there...

if they carried better food and fed the rats a better mix, they'd get a 10. the best they carry is kaytee blocks and they feed the rats a seed/kaytee mix. boo.

and as has been said, petco is horrible. small local places are depressing it's so bad inside. i wont go near any of them.

I either order online, or go to a decent local pet supply store that doesn't sell animals. Of the pet stores around here, most aren't even close to being acceptable, and there is one in particular that I would like to firebomb: pine, mixed sexes, sells baby and pregnant rats, sells live feeders, makes their own frozen feeders, and who knows what else.

I will admit that the PetSmart isn't bad, but I don't believe live animals should be sold in pet stores so I prefer not to support them. If I had no other choice, that is where I would go, but never to buy an animal from them.

Petsmart is really good here.
They have all their gerbils, hamsters and siberian hamsters on aspen and the rats, and guinea pigs on carefresh.
I find they usually have a really good stock of items and everything seems really good, including the health of the animals.
I gave them a 10. The staff is really good there and from what I've seem are really knowledgable.
Yep but that's my own opinion Grin

I chose other, because I only shop at Pet Supplies Plus... the only animals they have there are cats from the Humane Society. Smiley

I shop at Petsmart.  They are good, but could be much better.  They are a clean, friendly facility - and they keep their animals clean, safe and well fed.  However, they don't stock a lot of stuff for rats, and the staff is not as helpful as I think they should be.  They just don't seem to know a lot.  Just the basics.   Undecided

Even the PetSMarts in my area vary. The one closest to me gets the high marks for knowledgeable staff, and for NEVER recommending pine. I asked them why they carry it - they said they have to. Maybe the chain has a contract with Kaytee? They also only carry one gender (females), keep the furries on carefresh (and the cage is always clean when I see it). If only they could carry Harlan/Teklad! The only store in my area that carries H/T is a reptile store...

Ok, EVERYONE! In 4 years, move to Ohio! I'm starting my own petstore, and I won't sell rats at all... *Of coarse, I'll keep a long list of breeders for those who are TRULY interested, and my rats will come to work with me*

For all the healthy rat food and hammocks you could ever NEED!
