Sanity Is The Playground Of The Unimaginative

WWW
« on: August 24, 2003, 02:27:27 PM »

As most of you know RAATS has a love list now with a good number of rats available in the NC/SC/VA area....I am a member of that group and am currently preparing to take in 2 litters as soon as they are weaned and 4 rats who will most likely be preggers.

Here is the background info:

I know as of now I am getting 2 litters from female dumbos who were rescued out of a feeder bin approx. 1 1/2 months ago.  They were purchased by the store as pets and then when they were not sold (for $21.99) they were thrown into the feeder tank.  A local Charlotte woman saved both females and they gave birth not more than 2 weeks ago.  She has approx. 20 babies.

Also, there is another woman who works at another store who has had people adopt rats as pets and bring them back.  Instead of placing these sweet rats into feeder bins (since this store has NO pet rats) she took them and placed them on a sort of permanent reserve in the back as breeders.  The store has accumilated 5 females and a GIANT male this way and they have decided that they do not want them all as breeders and that they HAVE to go.  She is purchasing all of them (-minus the male *maybe*) and I am taking them.  All of these females are most likely preggers again as well since they have been in with Ratzilla (the huge male).

So.....within the next month I should have 5-6 litters all fosters and all needing homes.  Please let people know.

I am very interested in adopting three babies of the same sex from one of these litters. I didn't think RAATS was going to have any more litters for a while, I'm so glad there are more babies!  Smiley

As bonnie said, we do NOT breed rats....we rescue them.  If we happen upon a situation where rats need help, we not only individually, but also as a group try to assist in the best ways we can.  In these cases, I did not rely on RAATS members to help...but i knew I could do something, so I am.  I will have TONS of rats within the next month or so needing homes, so just keep checking by for updates OR email me at Sanitsplayground@aol.com.  I will try and keep everyone posted, but if there is something you need to know I am more likely to check there first.  Smiley

I would love to help by fostering some of these ratties if you need foster homes. I have room for up to six more rats depending on sex, unless you have cages to loan then i might be able to take more.
I live near Hickory. Let me know what I can do.

I am hoping to find homes for most of the rats before the three week quarantene is over.  If not, I will definately conciter foster homes as my hands will be quite full.  But I do not know as of now, and to be honest, I wouldn't take on any rats unless I COULD care for them for the rest of their lives, so i am pretty sure everything will be ok.

As of now I would like to update and state that I will be picking up the two litters on friday.  They are all berks, hoodeds and pews from what i understand and they are sexed already and seperated.  They will be quarantened for 3 weeks at which point they will be between the ages of 7 and 9 weeks.

If anyone is interested we will have both sexes.  Please email me.  thanks.

OK, I picked up the two weaned litters yesterday and OMG, how freakin cute... Smiley  (they are 6 weeks).

The woman couldn't bare to part with all of them, so she only sent me home with 8.  They are mostly PEWS and Dark Berks...(am not sure which color yet because they have yet to loose the baby fur)...they look like they are mink now, but they may change.  There are also a couple of hoodeds.

ALSO, one of my preggers girls gave birth last night to 10 healthy squeekers.  I will update as their markings and sexes become clear.

I will also be taking lots of pics, though it might take a while since the momma has made it very clear with a few warning bites that I am to leave the babies ALONE.  Smiley

Hi,

I live in the Raleigh area and am very interested in adopting at least two of the babies rats. I have owned rats before, so I know what am getting into to. Please let me know what I need to do and how I can contact you.

Thanks,

You can check out the RAATS website at www.carolinarats.org and contact either myself or Bonnie for more info on any of the rats.  We ask a number of questions to ensure you would make a good home for the animal and then we contact the foster parent and let them know you have/have not been approved and they then move forward to make arrangements to meet up with you.

Depends on where you are in GA, but we aren't too far.  To be honest a couple of years back when I was looking for healthy rats from breeders GA was the only place close enough to find them.  I drove 5 hours each way to finally have rats in my home again.

I recently moved to a wee little town in North Georgia; still feeling out the area.  My only problem... I'm almost 20 and I don't drive.   Dunno what it is, but, I've really got no desire to drive...  even my parents thought I was strange before I moved, I get around for both mine and my animals sake, but, of course, I've got the bestest boyfriend ever... but, I don't think he'd be too keen on the idea of going to NC for a rattie.  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

[edit]
Oh, and, btw, what breeder did ya use? I've looked around here (online) and e-mailed a few, no answer. =/

Well, the breeders I found there in GA no longer breed.  Sad  But, If you live in N. GA you really aren't too far.  I can get to Atlanta from Charlotte in 4 hours.  I am sure we can find some sort of middle ground transport if you are seriously interested.

GA isn't far at all. When Kris (here on these boards) adopted from me, I drove about 4.5 hours to Gastonia (Near Charlotte) and I think she drove about the same from the Atlanta area....  since SaniT already lives in Charlotte, it's that much closer for you guys. 2 hours is not that bad....   Cheeky  Wink

I actually live about an hour to 90ish minutes North of Atlanta, fairly close to the SC border, but, agian my issue is muh non-driving.  Cheeky I'd really love to find a friend for little Shiro and I've been looking just about everywhere with no luck... local vets, breeders, local shelters (Which, might I add, the lady asked if I was serious when I asked if they ever adopted out ratties   ), and I'm still looking around, but RAATS seems to agian be the closest rescue and no breeders around here ever answer me, (I'm not even sure if they still do). I'd love to be able to find someone close to me, rescue/breeder, or someone able to get them toward Atl./Buford area... I just need to get my license.   Sad 2

Well Cricket,

If your wonderful BF would be willing to meet me half way we could definately work something out.  My guess is it would be about 1 1/2 hours or less for each of us which is NOT bad at all.  If you ask around on the boards I am sure you will discover that a distance such as tht is one of the shortest distances ANYONE has traveled to get a rat from a non-pet shop source.

Anyhoo, an hour and a half is nothing.  I would be happy to meet you half way.

I'm serious. ^.^

I finally had a breeder/rescue respond to an e-mail. Yay! Amy Epperley of Phoenix Gate in GA has a few babies and a few older adult males she's trying to adopt out and making an ATL/North GA run here soon to deliever a litter and she'd be more than willing to head over to the Mall of Georgia to drop off one for me. ^.^ I'd love to have another dumbo in my 'family'; but, as my ratty is currently living at the Bf's house (I'm supposed to live in the college dorms  Wink ) and since I spend more time/have more room for his giant cage there,  I need to talk to him before I say yes to another baby (or two   ). Angelldust (I belive) also contacted me about black rex dumbo's that will be arriving soon from her foster.
