Their names are Harry and Harriet. They are so sweet! Any tips on dealing with them (keeping them warm, and special needs) etc would be appreciated. I have done a lot of research, but you folk are so knowledgeable there MUST be something I don't already know Smiley

Thanks!

I have 4 double rex dumbo rats. There's no hair at all on 3 of them.  It's pretty easy for me to keep them warm because they room with furry buddies.  I also keep fleece hammocks and extra nesting material in their cages. ( paper towels, scraps of fleece).

You'll LOVE them.  I didn't care much for hairless until I owned one.  They feel so warm and soft and have a special smell (Yes, I too am a rat sniffer like others here)
that I really like.

Congratulations on the new babies.

Oh, I'm jealous! I want a hairless rat! GGMR only hits me when I see hairless and merles, so it's hitting me hard right now.
Wish I could convince my Dad to elt have more than three rats.  Cry

Hi. Being a brand new rat mommy and all I'm really not familiar with the hairless rats. I've seen them before but it was back in the dark days when I used to think that all rats were... um... (can't say because my little girls are present) Anway, so I never REALLY paid much attention to them =(

Besides the obvious difference of their coat, is there any other difference in their temperaments or anything like that? I guess I'm just looking to be more... "well rounded?" rat owner. Just wondering...

If you r a warm person (Like I tend to be) hairless are more cuddly with you if you are a cold person like my fiance a furred rat would be best for you I have found!  LOL

Persoanlity there isn't much of a differnce.  They need more bedding and fleece to stay warm and they are usually more suceptible to ilnesses having a lower immune system from the mutation.

You don't breed hairless the same as most rats as it can be a health hazard to the mother and babies.  Hairless does often don't lacate, and have poor mothering skills.  I have also heard that after having a litter hairless does also tend to have an even lower immune system but I have seen no actual proof of this and I think it may have been a hypothesis.

My hairless boy Rosko sleeps with me and cuddles in my sleve almost everywhere including school, the store etc...  I love all rats but my two hairless seem to be more content with sleeping in my warm armpit then running around the world like their furred cusions!  LOL

I want a hairless rat!!!!

I saw two at a pet store a couple years ago and I was dying to get one.

Fortunately for them, but unfortunately for me, hairless rats don't end up in rescues very often.  Oh, well.   Undecided

That doesn't prevent me from wanting one.

Rapunzel & Godiva

« Reply #10 on: May 07, 2002, 01:22:28 PM »

I, too, am owned by 2 little hairless sisters...Rapunzel & Godiva!  These are my first ratties, but I don't do anything to keep them warm really.  I use a folded piece of fleece as a hammock, that way if they're chilly or just want it dark, they can sandwich themselves between the layers, or lie on top.

They feel like warm, squishy chamois'!
