Rat Lover!

« on: May 06, 2002, 03:49:55 PM »

Hello,
I've already posted an ad for my soon to be babies in th adoption area but I was wondering what else I can do to find good homes for the babies. The store that I got the mother from said they'd take the babies (to sell) but I'm moving next week. Any suggestions on how to find people that want babies? I'm in MN by the way. Thanks for any suggestion you can offer.

I live in Britain so things may be a little different..but I would advertise in vet surgeries, local newspapers and find as many specialist web sites as you can. I know you're moving but maybe you could phone ahead to the newspapers n vets? Just a thought...good luck!

I agree 100% with posting at vets offices, there you will find people that care about their pets!  Also, I brought a few babies with me to show the staff while I asked about putting up a notice ( I put a cute picture with the notice too).  Well, I adopted 4 babies out to the staff, because the babies were irresistible,  and 3 more out to clients of the same vet. ( I kept 4 for myself). Good luck!!!

There are some good tips here, at the bottom of the page:

(note - soon the adoption page itself will point to the forum instead of remaining on the RFC site. This way, people can keep track of their own ads)

I run a rattery and a rescue and most of my advertisind is done locally through word of mouth, posting flyers at grocery stores (my all time favorite!  LOL) and where ever else I can.  Also leaving your business card at places and talking to pet store owners and veternarians letting them know.  I'm also a dog trainer and I moved from a small "everybody knows your name" town to Salem Oregon and am trying to get my business up and running again but also advertise my rats as pets with my business.

I still screen people just the same.  Most people only call with questions but my poitn really is getting the word out.  If you advertise as pets that helps.  I also advertise in local small papers which is all I can afford right now time and money wise!

I would just say use normal business techniques for advertising- catch attenton then weed out the not so great possible rat owners.  So far I have placed wonderful rats in wonderful homes- mainly 'replacement' rats when someone lost an old baby and couldn't find a friendly one or wanted a healthy one....

Hope these ides help!  Be sure to boast how young socolization makes healthier and smarter rats and I have the scientific article to prove it if you would like!

I just sent your email to a person who's looking to get rats for her daughter.

If worse comes to worse, the Humane Society in Golden Valley (Hennepin County) is a no kill shelter and usually has a very good success rate at adopting out rats. You might also contact your local schools and ask if the science teachers might be interested in taking some babies.

Keep me posted on how you're doing placing them and I'll see what other options I can think of for you.

Good luck!
