In Memory of the Countess Arabella: July 18th 2003

« on: September 19, 2003, 03:19:19 PM »

Schubert was fine, when all of a sudden he began to look woozy, and sluggish. Now he's just laying here on his belly looking tired.

... He doesn't seem to have myco signs..
 Anyone ever experience this..
 He's not that old either..
 maybe only 5 months..

Weird, and proud of it!

Is he able to get up and move on his own?  Or is he totally limp if you pick him up?

He really needs to see a vet.  Sudden lethargy is not a good thing, and ratties can hide the signs of illness remarkably well...

Moose says, "Get in my Belly"

Is he cold ~or~ hot to touch? One of my babies went into sudden shock (no idea why) and was VERY cold. I wrapped him in warm blankets and did everything in my power to keep him warm (not hot). He pulled through but I of course went to the vet.

I hope all is well, please keep us updated.

Take him in your hands, hold him with both hands (somewhat firmly), raise him high above your head, with his nose pointed up, then with a quick arcing motion with arms extended, swing him down so that when the arc is finished he is head down (or nose down) by your knees.  DO NOT DROP HIM!!!!  Be rapid in your movements but not reckless.  DO THIS NOW.  Do it two or three times or as needed.

The idea is to use centrifugal force to dislodge what's choking him.

Check his mouth to see if whatever is choking him has been dislodged.

The Fling according to Debbie D's Rat Health Care Book:

"Hold your rat firmly around the neck with one hand, and by the base of the tail with the other to hold the rat securely.  Make sure there are no objects within an arm's length.  Lift the rat overhead and bring her/him down in a rapid arc, so that at the end of the path the rat's tail is up and head is down.  This can be repeated three to four times, then give the rat a rest, check his or her breathing, and se if anything is visible in the mouth.

However, do not do this procedure if your rat CAN breath, or it might make things worse."

Hope if the first "Fling" post wasn't clear, this one is.

Hope it helps.

I just want to reiterate.  Don't to the "fling" IF HE IS STILL BREATHING!!

If he's got a bit of food or something lodged in his throat, it'll most likely work itself either up or down... Encourage him to drink.   The fling is a last resort measure, just like the heimlich is with people.  If he can still breathe, flinging him might dislodge it enough so that he can't breathe at all.

An update on Schubert.

 He's a-ok!  Hyper

I was so worried for my baby, and I was scared to death when he began to show the same signs of weariness as my bella before she died. I just lost her this July and I was not losing him so quickly.

I want to thank all of you for your concern, and help Heart Schubert is happily motoring around his cage, and thanks you as well.
