Hi! My name is alayna and I love rats.  I always wanted a pet rat, but my parents would never let me.  So finally, me and my mom got to play with a few rats at the petstore.  My mom fell in love with them just like me.  So we convinced my dad to let me get one and I named him Tobby.  Then we got I second rat named Oreo Chocolate Fudge (Fudgie) since we liked them so much.  But when we got Tobby, he was sick.  He just died.

This is Alayna's mom.  We joined this site together and I know we should not have just one rat.  We bought the Tobby first at a pet store.  After some research we went back for his cagemate, Mr. Fudge, for companionship.  Tobby was showing signs of illness soon after we brought him home, and did more research and found a local vet who would treat rodents.  He was hospitalized and put on oxygen and iv fluids for three days, returned home better, got worse and was hospitalized again.  As you can see they were separated from the get-go so the healthy Fudge would not get sick.  We have had hamsters, mice and gerbils but rats are new!!  Tobby became sick again and this time had mites.  I was so scared and overwhelmed that I did not want another rat.  Eventually I tried to adopt and came up with four rats that we are "sitting" for a local college girl.  Now that Tobby has passed we want another boy for Fudge.  I have been searching for rescues, as I refuse to buy from a pet store again.  We live in Pittsburgh, PA, if you know of any breeders let me know.  I found two and tried to e-mail but it was returned host-unknown.

Thanks!!!

Oh, geez, did you have to show me Kamloops SPCA?  I pass it about 4 times a day and fight the urge to go in.  It's so darn sad.  I can't take anymore boys, and I swear I know that hooded boy.  He looks just like one a girl in my son's class used to have.  Arrrggghhhh you're killing me!  NO more new rats!  Please PM me in the future and tell me when you're gonna post about ones here in town so I don't come on. Just kidding.  I will see if anyone I know has room for just one or two or three more Cheeky although I doubt it.  The problem here is there is a petshop that sells herps and he practically gives the rats away and actually advocates backyard breeding. Grrrr.  There are just too many rats in this town and I only have so much space and money.....

:)Thank you for the breeders.  I did see both of those name and have tried to contact Cathi's Critters, but not the Chew Chew.  I just e-mailed them and I'll let you know.  In the meantime if you do have additional names of breeds and could let me know, I would appreciate it. Thanks again for your time!!

cathi closed down a LONG time ago.

the chew crew is an OLD rattery and i dont think they are breeding anymore either -- their website hasnt been updated in a LONG time and all their rats would be close to 3 if not over 3 years old. they havent had a litter born in over 3 years.

so basically, those two breeders are DEAD ENDS. there are no real high quality breeders at ALL in PA to recommend at all.

I found a breeder in West Virginia with babies available in a few weeks.  It's only about two hours from PA where I am.  Also, Kims Ark notified me of two rats available for adoption in my area which I am very interested in.  I think they are wild and I am waiting for more information.  I also read on this site that there are two guys available in Hershey, PA.  Thank to everyone for your help.  I'm sure Mr. Fudge won't be lonely for long!!!!
