Author Topic: measurements in a R-695?  (Read 1546 times)
Anna

« on: May 08, 2002, 10:04:30 PM »

So I've traditionally not been a fan of martin's cages because of an accident that happened in one when I had rats a few years back(rat caught and broke her foot, they don't seem to have that model anymore)
But now that I'm cage shopping I can't find anything better.
So I'd like some measurements on the 695 if someone out there woudn't mind whipping out the measuring tape.
What are the measurements of the squares of wire on the walls?
On the balconies and ramps?
Of the opening between floors?

Is there wire in the bottom of the cage?
How is the pan attached?
Does anyone have any critiques of these cages, any problems, any accidents, etc?
Is the pan deep enough?
Do you find a lot of bedding outside the cage? Poops? Food?
Where do you keep your food dishes?
Do you have a wheel? Is there enough room for it?
If you didn't/dont have a hammock, where do they sleep?
Do the rats seem to like it?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I'm pretty reticent to buy a cage I haven't examined and handled. If coast cages had a bigger one, I'd never change...

What are the measurements of the squares of wire on the walls? 1" x 1/2" (rat-size)
On the balconies and ramps? 1/2" x 1/2" (too small for little feet)
Of the opening between floors?  9" between floora
iIs there wire in the bottom of the cage? No
How is the pan attached? Drop in

Does anyone have any critiques of these cages, any problems, any accidents, etc? No problems at all
Is the pan deep enough? I'd honestly prefer a deeper one, but that's more to keep interested little dogs farther away...
Do you find a lot of bedding outside the cage? Poops? Food? Nope.
Where do you keep your food dishes? Food dish is front-right corner, and water bottle's about three inches behind it.
Do you have a wheel? Is there enough room for it? No wheel, but planning on getting on. Plenty of spots for it.
If you didn't/don't have a hammock, where do they sleep? They've got about three or four sleping areas.
Do the rats seem to like it? They love it!

Hope I've helped some!  Smiley

Pretty simple, actually. The pan is obvious. Dump out the old stuff, give it a good wipe down, and put new stuff in. For the wire, I use a rag and give it a good rub-down with soap and water. Some of the corners are a little hard to reach, but it's not really a huge ordeal.

Several people put it in their shower for a good wash down ...... whatever is easiest for you!  Krystal, you're local to me, if you'd like to see one in person, that can be arranged.   Smiley

Is there wire in the bottom of the cage?
No, wire shelves and ramps, and wire middle floors on certain models.
How is the pan attached?
Martin's give you two spring doohickies, that attach to the pan and stretch to attach the cage securely.
Does anyone have any critiques of these cages, any problems, any accidents, etc?
My only recommendation is to order your cage with hinged top...costs a little extra, but on the larger models is a tremendous help when cleaning and hanging toys,
Is the pan deep enough?
In my opinion no....I would like to see them offer a deeper pan, but there are easy ways around this draw-back.
Do you find a lot of bedding outside the cage? Poops? Food?
Not alot, but enough to warrent bi-weekly vaccuming/sweeping.  You can make a plastic barrier...email me if you want to know how I did it....that keeps ALOT of the stuff inside the cage.  It also helps if you are using a heavier pelleted litter....the lighter stuff like Carefresh and aspen gets scattered pretty easy.
Where do you keep your food dishes?
I have R690's which come with full middle floors, and I keep them there.  I use Super Pet food hoppers, not bowls.
Do you have a wheel? Is there enough room for it?
No wheel, but that's just because I haven't gotten around to it. Grin  There is plenty of space for one in the cages I have.
If you didn't/dont have a hammock, where do they sleep?
I do have a hammock, but I also provide a sleeping box on the topmost balcony.  It's just a plastic rubbermaid shoe box attached to the cage bars with twist-ties, with litter and nesting material inside.  Mine sleep in both.
Do the rats seem to like it?
I think my ratties really like it...I know I do.  I've made my own cages before, but had a problem with one of my ratties breaking their arm quite badly on a homemade cage.  So I just figure spend the $$ on something that's gonna last, and is well made.

I do believe that most of their cages come with hinged tops, anyway. I know the R-695 and R-690 do. Atleast...mine did...something they've just recently changed, maybe?

I got my 695 about 2 months ago now, and it doesn't have the flip top.  I just checked the webpage and it does NOT mention it. You just got lucky or someone else's order!!  I WISH mine had the flip top!! It sure would be easier to hang hammocks and toys.

They must have.  I got my cages almost 2 years ago now, and I had to special order the hinged top.

I would love to know how you did it, since I use CareFresh.  Grin I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Kay here goes:

Items needed:
- measuring tape
- felt tipped pen
- box knife or other similar cutting tool
- straight edge
- plastic covers for overhead florecent lights (This is the best and cheapest thing I've found to use for this project...easy to cut.  They are readily available in any hardware store.)

1. Measure the outside base of your cage, the wire part NOT the pan...add 1/2 inch to these measurements.  (For any Martin's cage you'll be making 2  of 2 different shapes, one for the sides and one for the ends.)
2. Take a sheet of plastic and divide it longways with your marker into 3 even pieces...gives you about a 5" wide piece I think.
3. Then mark out the lengths that you'll need to make your four cage bottom barriers.
4. Cutting this stuff is a bit tricky...your gonna want to score the material first and then snap it along your score lines.  First score the 3 long pieces with your knife and straight edge(trust me, it really helps Smiley ), and then carefully snap them apart...you should have 3 long pieces approximately 5" wide at this point.
5. Score and snap along the lines you made to shorten the pieces into the needed lengths.
6. Your done!  Grin

Slip each piece into the base pan, between the plastic and the wire...if all went correctly they'll be ridged enough to hold themselves upright.  Some tweaking might be needed on the length...measuring and marking beforehand is essential to success of this project.  The only draw back is that you can't use the spring-doohickies that Marten's provides to fasten the pan to the cage...so make sure you don't have to worry about your cage being accidentally tipped over.

no. I got my 695 less than a week ago, and no flip top lid, I even inquired how much extra it would cost, (10 bucks)  but decided against it since I was using cable ties to put it together. I did get the extra balcony for five bucks though.  They're people are soooooo nice and helpful to work with.

I saw that most of the questions got answered completely, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents (Canadian... not worth as much as US, sorry, but I keep getting them in my change and can't get rid of them!).

I put the cage in the shower and hose it down with scalding hot water. Then I use one of those semi-scratchy O-Cell-O sponges to scrub off the worst of the pee on the second level (which is covered). Then I squirt the enzyme cleaner all over the second floor and soak the sponge. I srub everything down quickly, and let it sit for a few minutes (time to bond with the rats!). Then I rinse it all off again with hot water, and dry it off as well as I can with an old bath towel.

My husband gets pan/litter duty, because the dirty litter really makes me sneeze, and he has NO allergies whatsoever. He scoops out the old, cleans it with enzyme cleaner, and then rinses with a spray bottle of water. Then he dries it, and leaves it for me to refill.

The poop-factor depends on the rats. My older boys used to poop on the second floor, and then flick them out of the cage with their tails when they walked past the pile. I kept a cardboard box at that end of the cage to catch 'em. The new boys aren't so bad, but the occasional poop gets flung...

Martin's will make custom alterations to your cage, if you email them at their custom link.  They charge $10 to add a "flip-top" but actually never ended up charging me the money.  The top lets me hang my Wodent Wheel.

I have a question too........how do you clean cages like that?  I've heard taking it outside and hosing it off, but I live in an apt. where we have no hose access.

I have a steam cleaner to clean mine.  I take the pan, toys and such and soak them in the tub with anti-bacterial soap and an enzyme cleaner (Nature's Miracle).  I put a big piece of vinyl (about $2/yard at fabric stores) down to cover the floor.  Put the cage on it and steam away.  That's the major cage cleaning.  In between I usally just wipe it down with diluted Nolvalsan every couple days and change the hammocks out (they pee in them).  I added another balcony to the cage.  I have 2 of the 3 balconies covered and the middle floor.  I wipe the floors, ramps and Wodent Wheel (they pee and poo in there too) with Nolvalsan.  I have 2 litter boxes filled with Cell Sorb.  I don't fill the bottom pan with the Cell Sorb.  I think you can just use a mild soap or enzyme cleaner spray the cage down.  Wipe it then spray it with water to clean it.  You just want to make sure all the soap or enzyme cleaner is off.

I had a Wobust Wodent Wheel in my R-695 and it fit fine.  Of course it fits even better in the R-695.  It will not fit through the doors though.  Right now I have the stand attached to the back wall and underside of the middle floor with plastic ties.  I then take the wheel off from underneath the cage.  Hanging the stand from the top gives more floor space.  If you get the flip top you will have easy access if you have the wheel on the middle floor or above it.

Along with hammocks and tubes I have a Super Pet Igloo on the bottom.

My ratties seem to be happy and I like it too!

> What are the measurements of the squares of wire
> on the walls?
1" by 1/2"

> On the balconies and ramps?
All internal wiring is 1/2" by 1/2"

> Of the opening between floors?
5" by 9"

> Is there wire in the bottom of the cage?
Absolutely not.  I wouldn't have bought one if there was.

> How is the pan attached?
With two of the little spring clasp hooks.  I actually use mine upside down and find that they hold on better that way.

> Is the pan deep enough?
At 3.5", the pan seems deep enough to me.  This is a matter of personal preference, however, and some users may disagree with me.

> Do you find a lot of bedding outside the cage? Poops?
> Food?
Nope.  None so far, anyway.

> Where do you keep your food dishes?
I keep the food dish & water bottle on the lowest balcony.  Ennoia does not like it when I put her food dish on the floor, and I do not like it when I put it near the top because there seems to be more food in the bedding.  This way, she can eat & then run down immediately to the "rest room" (the bottom of the cage, where she does all of her "business").

> Do you have a wheel? Is there enough room for it?
Yes & yes.  However, I would suggest getting an R-695 with the flip-top.  The reason is that a wodent wheel will not fit through the doors of the cage, so the only place you can put it if you don't have a flip-top is on the bottom floor (basically lowering the cage over it), unless you want to build it into the cage.  The flip-top allows for a lot more creativity & changability in terms of design.

> If you didn't/dont have a hammock, where do they
> sleep?
I do have a hammock, Ennoia doesn't use it.  She sleeps on the upper level at the top of the ramp.  I still don't know why she picked this location.  Probably because there is no traffic from other ratties to discourage her.

> Do the rats seem to like it?
She appears to love it.

The doors are 11" wide by 12" tall.  The door openings are 10" by 10".

Please note that the pan dimensions are a little bigger than the cage, especially with the overhang at the top.  The cage is 1'6" by 2'6", while the pan is 1'8" by 2'8" at the base and 1'9" x 2'9" at the top.  This is some significant distance when you are planning around a door (like I was), so you should keep it in mind.

I have a Wodent Wheel on the bottom, but I agree that a flip-top would be convenient for hanging the wheel.
I have a couple of 4" diameter tubes hanging from the top that they love - and a corner hammock to hang out in.  I put a ferret pan in the corner of the middle floor with cloth to cuddle in, oh, and a "tent"(part of a sweat pant leg) on the top balcony.
My food dish hooks to the side of the cage.
My boys sleep either together in the ferret pan, separately in the tent and on the hammock, or together on the bottom in a nest they'll make from the Eco bedding (I sprinkle some over the Yesterdays News).
I only get occasional pellets or food on the carpet, not much though.

Your 695 should be a PALACE for two boys!  It may not look big, but just wait until the first time you have to clean it out!  My 680 is the same base size, but not as tall, and since I'm a short person, I have all I can do to lug it into the tub for a scrubbing!

Oh good, that's what I thought.  I just want to spoil my babies oh so much!  But I thought the 690 was as tall as the 695, but a smaller base size?  I guess I'm just confused.
