Alternatives to roasted soy nuts
«
on:
May 09, 2002, 10:59:21 AM »
I currently feed Suebee's mix to my girls. But I have found that they don't like the roasted soy nuts. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives.
Thanks

other soy products, such as tofu (cooked if you buy it in bulk), soy milk, soy yogurt... etc.
The point of the soy nuts is that soy contains cancer-fighting agents.
Some rats like 'em, and some don't. I realized that with my last crew, Lister was the one eating all the soy nuts -- after he passed away, they were the only thing left in the bowl each day. Go figure!

I buy this stuff called "Soy Granola" at Trader Joe's. Its really more like Kix, but made out of soy flour. This is definitely my girls favorite part of their food. They wont touch soy nuts either.

I have a soy muffin recipe that I use for my rats. Send me a private message if you would like the recipe.
It uses soy flour (available at most specialty/health food stores, and some regular grocery stores), and
very
little sugar. My rats have all loved them: they gobble them right up.

Let's say I use Suebee's diet but substitute tofu for the soy nuts. How would I go about preparing it, how much and how often to feed it too them?

I wish I could help with the tofu. I have only ever eaten it myself once, at a sushi restaurant, and I have never purchased it or cooked with it.
Soy contains a lot of protein, so a small amount each day should be fine. If you buy it pre-packaged in the store (as opposed to bulk), you can feed it to them right from the package.
