Poor Cous Cous, I can't believe she was carrying all of these around inside of her... She had her surgery today and all went well, but they found FIVE stones inside of her! Two large ones, two medium sized ones, and a small one. One of the vet techs came in to help them flush out the smallest one, and she thought that was the one stone they were after, then the vet directed her to the other four large stones set aside. Here are some photos I took:
They gave us these four to keep, but there was one other they sent away to be examined that was the same size as the largest one pictured here (the penny's there so you have an idea of how big they are).
Now I'm hoping we can find out what the stones were made of so we can change her diet and make sure she doesn't get these things back again.
Poor little Cous! Thanks again for everyone's help, and for urging me to get her into a vet ASAP! I'm so glad I did!

OMG!
Poor little rattie.
How is she, has she come round yet, did they let you take her home?
You know of course that she's going to demand LOTS of yoggies to fill the space those nasty stones took up!

She's doing fine, and she's home, she woke up very quickly and was giving the vets kisses and eating and drinking. Right now she's sleeping in her hammock, but she's trying to avoid sleeping on her belly for the time being.

When you get the results PLEASE share them with us as to what might have been the cause. Seems to be rare since no one else has seen it in their ratties but I'd like to know what in the diet caused it for my own knowledge!
Glad to here she made it through with no problems
and man those stones must have hurt!

I was surprised that nobody else here has had this happen to their rat... my regular vet had never heard of it before (well, in rats anyway), and the vet who preformed the surgery had only ever removed stones in guinea pigs. I'm contemplating phoning the rat lady and asking how common this is.
I'll make sure to let you all know the results. It'll probably take at least a week before we find out.

Good Grief!! Poor little thing! I don't know what size a ratties bladder is normally, but she must have felt like she was carrying rittens around or something, that is unbelievable that so many stones were there.
Glad to hear that she is doing so well! And yes, please share the results of the tests

Actually the bladder is only about the size of a pea, so it was probably pretty stretched out with all of those stones.

Poor Cous Cous! It's hard to believe 1 little rat could have all of those in her. No wonder who couldn't pee.
I agree, please let us know the results. I'm also curious.

Ooooouuuuuccccchhhh! Just looking at those makes my bladder hurt. She must have thought she had to go all the time. I'm glad you were able to catch that and I hope you can figure out what's causing it so she doesn't have to go through that again. Yikes! No wonder she doesn't want to sleep on her belly. Get better soon, CousCous!

Whoa! She's got to be feeling sooooooo much better! My sister had kidney stones and I think they were about the same size! I can't wait to find out what caused those in your Cous Cous. I'm glad she's okay!
Is it okay if I send those photos of the stones to my vet? I'm sure she'd be very interested to see them!

Sure.
Don't forget to mention that there was one more in addition to these four that was the same size as the largest one.

Im sure Ive missed it somewhere, but could you please tell me how old Cous Cous is and what her diet is?
I have never seen this in rats, though it is common in dogs. As a veterinary technician student, I am very, very interested in the facts surrounding this problem. I will also be interested to hear whether it is triple phosphate (struvite) stones or another type.
In dogs it can be diet related, genetic, or both.
I hope she continues to do well...sounds like you have found a GREAT rat vet.

It is SO good that you figured out what was hurting her and got a competent person to help her! Those look TERRIBLE- I can't even imagine how bad it must have felt. Hope her incision feels better soon, although it must feel great compared to those awful stones!

Cous Cous is about 11 months old and she eats Nutro dog food (the overweight dog formula) along with lots of fresh veggies, fruits, grains, cereals, etc. The only thing diet-related I can think of is possibly too much protein. I'd give all five of them a piece of cheese and Cous Cous would steal practically all of them for herself. I hope that's what these stones are made of because I can easily fix that.

She seems to be feeling better now. I think it still hurts her to pee, but my mother had surgery on her bladder and she says it usually burns pretty bad for a few days afterward. But Cous Cous hasn't squeaked or had any of those strange stomach spasms she was having, and she's been her usual hyper self. She really wants back in the big cage with her pals, but they are just a little too interested in her incision right now.
Thought maybe I should reiterate, there was one more stone besides those four in the picture. The fifth stone was the same size as the biggest one in the photo.
Oh, and does anyone know why they're so red? Is that just blood that's making them that colour?
