Where Do You Keep Your Rats?
«
on:
April 17, 2002, 07:33:32 AM »
Just out of interest I was wondering which room in the house people keep their ratties?
I keep mine in the bedroom which I found a bit strange at first because I could not get to sleep because my ratties were up to mischief and made alot of noise.

Well I have a one-room bedsit so I don't have a lot of choice really! They sleep with me
I have got used to the noise, but it drove my poor Mum mad when she came to stay. In the end I had to put them in the kitchen.

Mine have been moved around a bit, as I have lived in 3 different houses with them. Started in daughter's bedroom, then they moved to the den, to the dining room
and now I have some in the living room, right in the middle of the action! the two newbies are in my bedroom, on the opposite end of the house. I didn't have the heart to quarentine them in the basement, since the were rescued from a basement.

My Romeo, male, is in my bedroom. He is still in quarantine, plus he is being treated for mites!
My girls were in our dining room until I got a crazy rat hungry foster dog! I foster for a rescue. I feared for my rats, so they are in our downstairs living room safe from the dog. I think my other dogs miss them though!

My big cage is in the "dining room" -- at least, that's what it's called on the floor plan. Really, it's the computer room, dining room, rat room and aquarium room. :~)
The tank, where Rimmer is living, is in the living room, in front of our bookcases. That way, I can keep an eye on him all the time, because he's getting on in months, and I don't know how much longer I'll have him. He's pretty healthy, though, so I hope he makes it to three!

Ours are in the bedroom (the only room where we can shut the cats out easily when necessary).
When they were babies it was an absolute nightmare, we had many sleepless nights! They've definitely chilled out now though (or have we just got used to it?!) and we don't hear them much at all.

My rats live in the computer/plant/overflow room - as far from my bedroom as I can possibly get in an apartment!

Our girls big cage is in the living room. Mr. Higgins has a smaller cage that goes into my daughter's bedroom at night and comes down into the living room or dining room during the day

My girl is in the living room. Just don't have room in the bedroom. She likes to be where the action is.

Our 5 boys are in a 4-foot-tall ferret cage right in the corner of the living room, and our hedgehog has her cage in another corner across from the ratties. We like having our furbabies right there with the rest of the family, particularly in the evenings, when the ratties and hedgie are up and feeling like playing and cuddling.
Honestly, the living room is about the only area where there is enough room for the cages anyway, but I'm not sure I'd want our nocturnal critters in the bedroom. We have enough trouble with our 3 cats and our dog keeping us up at night as it is!

Mine's in the bedroom too. Sleeping in the same bedroom every night aslo is my boyfriend, our cat, and our fish. Between my boyfriend hogging pillows, blankets, bed space, thrashing in the night, the cat crying and crawling on my back, and the running water in the fish tank sending me to the bathroom every few hours, rat noise is the least of my worries. It doesn't even phase me! Plus when I get up out of bed to pick up boyfriend's pillow off the floor (mine's now under his head), let cat out of the room, or go to the bathroom there is a smiling rat face waiting to greet me. I love having the cage in the bedroom.

I'm temporarily living in a teeny one bedroom apartment, an the best place for my rats ended up being next to the dining room table, not only because of the space, but the tile floor
. It makes dinner time interesting, trying not to give in to their oh so cute faces begging for food!
They are also by a window so on warm days I open the bilnds for them and crack open the window....in fact, I'll go do that right now.....

My rat lives in her two-story cage, right next to the sofa in the living room. Since rats are active at night and I absolutely have to get my sleep at night, I didn't want to put her in the bedroom. Plus, I wanted my rat to feel like she's a part of the family, so I put her cage where interesting things will be going on each day, right next to the sofa in the living room. She gets to come out with me since I do a lot of my work on the sofa. Also, she is right there when anyone gets home, when my boyfriend's kids do their homework, when we play games on the coffee table, whenever anything is going on, basically.

Our ratty boys started off in the dining room, but they spent every meal begging for food, with the children getting told off by daddy for feeding them, and not facing the table etc.
I have now moved them into the living room, where they are so much more part of family life. They spend the evenings coming in and out of the cage, where they hitch lifts with whoever is passing, and we have a ladder which lets them down onto the settee whenever there is someone there to supervise.

the rattie girls cage is in the kitchen/den combo room. Which is also where the computer is. I love watching listening to them move around and play. They also get out time on the kitchen island.

Mine is next to the computer, which is about 3 feet from my Bed. Duke isn't that loud so I don't have the problems that most people talk about.

my rats are in the finished part of the basement. the reason being, this is the toy room, and computer and game room, and also it remains constant temperature year round, so I can modify the humidity/heating for my reptiles as well far easier than the other rooms in the house..

I've never owned a dining room table, so I end up putting my cages and my computer desk in whatever dining nook my then apartment provided.
Now that I'm living at home, they are in the spare/computer/laundry room that I'm staying in.

Mine are
usually
in the living room where they get lots of attention, but we recently got a new dog that hasn't figured out yet that the rats are not dog treats. So for now they live in the guest room with the door closed. But they live in a Martins R-695 that stays open all the time on top of a 4' long table, so they are very happy!
I did have to put a sheet on the wall though since they decided they didn't like the color of the paint.

All my rats live in the living room, not only because it's the biggest place with the most room, but because that Wodent Wheel makes a lot of noise at night and I would never sleep if they were in the bedroom!

Ours are in the Living room atop our (used to be) kitchen table. Now we eat off of T.V. trays!
Just finished setting up a little "rattie gymnasium" using their cages, a Glad box, an old pair of flannel PJ bottoms, and a Wobust Wodent Wheel! The girls enjoy climbing around in it, as well as on it, but Ayo is not too impressed with my handiwork.
ah, well.

My girlie girls are in the computer/animal/spare bedroom. For now that is. If my little brother comes to college here with me, he'll be moving in, and I have a feeling the ratties may be relocated. He informed me that he'd never be able to have any girls come over if there were rats in his room, and I told him only the girls who would come over and give them belly kisses were allowed to date my brother! I have high standards as far as animal loving goes for that boy!

Mine are in the living room. I have a little cage on the side table right next to my recliner that my girl Sara is in. I sit in the recliner and she sits in her hammock. When I call her, she comes running to the side of the cage where I am.
Then I have my big Fatso male in an aquarium on the floor but when I'm home, I take him out and put him on top where he just sits and watches the crazy house hold here (two dogs and the parrot).

I know this sounds obsurd to all u rat lovers, but my
Mum makes me keep my darlings in the shed !!
I hate to think of my darlings in the cold dusty, dark shed. But nothing I say will make a difference to her !!
She thinks they stink and they poop and pee everywhere.
Anyone know anything I could tell her to make her believe that its "normal" and fine to keep rats inside

The furniture is arranged very oddly in my room, and since the ratties can't go anywhere else in the house, I abducted a kid's table (about the same size as a professionally made stand), and the cage sits on that 1ft from my bed. I sleep on the other side of the bed though, so it's not like they're inches away from my face.

I keep my girls in my bedroom. In fact, I can't sleep unless I hear those ratty noises at night! When I went to stay with my grandparents for a week last summer I had to take them with me or I knew I wouldn't sleep a wink.

The 7 that live at home live in the computer room. Their play area is the laundry room during the cold months and the garage when it warms up.
My school rats inhabit the entire counter space that runs across the back of my room. In the summer, they live in the garage. I air condition it on really hot days by leaving open the door to the laundry room and running a fan. Other days they get some fresh air, which they seem to love!
The garage set up consists of 3 cardtables with two 8 foot pieces of plywood stretched across them. A section of the area is for cages and the rest has tons of toys, boxes, tubes, digging boxes, etc. . .
