Author Topic: so, is my rat Himilayan or what?  (Read 1984 times)

I took some photos of my rat awhile back, and some folks thought it might be Himilayan. What does this mean? Is she rare? Anyway, I took more photos, although not the clearest shots, they look clear on my photo program, but when loaded on a server,...yuck.

Our rat Willow is either Siamese or Himalayan, - haven't figured out which yet here's a couple of pics of her.  I think sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, it's more a matter of genetics from what I've read.

I have seen photo's from a few people on the board who have one or the other, did you know you can get dumbo himalayan/siamese!  I know a breeder who is considering a litter of dumbo/siamese/rex (curly fur), now they would just be adorable! Grin

I still have a hard time remembering the difference between Himilayan and Siamese, no matter HOW many times people tell me. I'm just not cut out for genetics.  Wink

But, I will say that she looks a lot like my Gordon, who the breeder told me was a seal-point Siamese.

Not rare, really... just one among the many rat markings out there. Smiley

*smiles sweetly at Gary and says gently..."

That's not pine in her cage is it?  I am hoping that it's big aspen or something.  Pine and cedar can cause problems for our rats breathing.   I know you are new to ratland  Smiley and you may not be aware that pine/cedar bedding is dangerous.

If I am mistaken, just bop me on the nose.   Cheesy

I'm no expert, but my guess would be that Gary's girl is indeed a Himilayan, and that Willow is a Siamese. I think the difference is that a Himi is mostly white, and the ears are generally pink. Only the nose and the rump at the tail base have the darker spot. Siamese usually have the darker ears as well, and their overall color isn't pure white but is more of a cream or beige hue.

My Goblin was a Himilayan. He was one of our first rats. When his nose and rump spot first started appearing (he just looked like a little PEW when he was a baby!), I thought he was just dirty!  Grin

Lol! I think it looks more like aspen to me... looks stringier than pine.

Hermoine looks just like the Himilayan rat and she is dumbo.  The pet store said she was Siamese, but she has the pink ears, so I am thinking she is not.  She is the sweetest rat!

Hey, Grace, that brings up a good question... if you do get brown-nosing points, does that make you a Himilayan, or a Siamese?! Heheheheheh!! Wink

Youch!  *rubs nose after all those boppings*

Sorry!  Smiley  The aspen that I have gotten is more in slivers, kind of like real thin, long toothpicks that are all crumpled up.  That's why I didn't recognize it.    Grin
