AAAAAHHHH!!!!!

« on: November 03, 2003, 03:10:23 PM »

I apologize for the length of this post in advance.  Three brothers who lived in my complex had 3 rats.  One ran away, one died, and Dad told them to get rid of the third one.  They came to me.  I am a veterinary technician, so taking care of a rat is no big deal.  The poor guy had lice, and a respiratory infection.  He is a hooded rat.  I put him on antibiotics, and he is doing much better.  Well, Dad got a snake, and this snake would not eat this rat that they bought.  The boys brought the rat over to me.  Well, it was a female, and I had only one cage.  Three weeks later, i had 8 babies.  Now, I still have all 10 of them.  8 girls, 2boys.  The boys are in a cage together, and 4 girls are together, and the other 4 girls are in a third cage.  Talking to the various pet stores, they would sell them for feeders.  I can't do that to them.  I just don't have time to spend with them.  They don't get any "out" time, due to me already having 10 cats in my house.  It's not fair for them to be stuck in cages all the time.  I have handled them some, but not enough.  The young male is near impossible to handle; he screaches when I go to pick him up.  Two of the females are hairless, and they are the gentlest of them all.  I would like to find someone who would be willing to take them from me.  if You care interested, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Tiffany McCumber

This girl was looking for some hairless. If you look at this thread and click on her name, it will give you her email address.

Those hairless girls sound precious! You are so awesome to be taking care of all them and not letting them go to petstores to sell them as feeders.
I'll check around. Maybe post their pix up around different animal hospitals? If you're desperate, the Humane Society says they won't put them down. I'd be worried about the squealer, tho. I had one like that and now he's my most loving boy. But it took a lot of time.
Do you have descriptions of all of them?
I also remember seeing some at Pets, Inc. on Mill Ave. and Southern and they told me they were trying to sell them for someone, but she would take the remainders back if not sold. You could try that route. (Although the rat I bought had myco.)

What are the ages?

Rugrat (the only one with a name) is a year or two.  The boys kept giving me conflicting ages, so I'm not really even sure on that.  He is the sweetest of the bunch.  The mom is maybe a year and a half old, and the babies are about 8 months.  I can't remember exactly when they were born, other than they were born on a Sunday, because they were there when I got back from church.  I talked to Pets, Inc awhile ago, and they said that they would take them but I didn't have a good feeling about it at that time.  So, I still have them.  I would like to keep Rugrat, but I really don't have the space to let him out (i also have 10 cats that might figure out that he could be dinner), so  I would like to find him a good home too.  I will try and get some pictures this next week.
Thanks,
T

update:

We'll have to work on pix. Julie got a hairless; a mini-Petunia. I took three other girls: a hairless and two black hoodies. I'm trying to socialize them and find them homes. As a group -- I don't want to split them up now. And of course scheming as to how to keep them. Wink Azsportsbikechick still has the momma and three girls, plus the dad and son.

Posted their pics in Rat Tails, 12-1-03:

BTW, my friend Julie was unable to take "mini-Petunia" due to illnesses with her ratties, so all four that I have at my house are still available.
