Natty & the ratties

WWW
« on: May 11, 2002, 11:12:51 PM »

Before we switched to this new forum, I posted a long winded question about the ethics of breeding and running a rescue at the same time.  I have been torn, wanting to do both, and (still) fully believing that it is possible to do both, and do both well.

I have, however, come to the conclusion that it would not be possible for ME to do both and do both well at the same time.  I have too many demands on my time, with personal life, volunteer work (Girl Scouts, the PTA, and an animal shelter), and a full time job.

Also, the more I read on this board, the less I know.  Does that make sense?  <laughing>

The rescue is beginning to take a ton of my time, and love, and effort, and money, and I willingly give it.  I am going to check it actual certification and non-profit status, and we are remodeling a room for our 'showroom' for the rattie adoptions.

Thank you, to everyone who weighed in with their opinions.  You are honest, candid and a great bunch of people.  I feel lucky to be able to 'pick your brains' on a daily basis.

Makes perfect sense. You'd never believe there was so much to know about rats...
I think you've made a good decision. If it's too much time with one, the rats of the other get neglected...not a good situation.

It's wonderful you take ratties in and try to find them loving homes.  That's got to be a huge job in itself!
Best of luck,
Teresa

This is a really good idea.  Just 3 weeks ago in my local paper, there was an ad saying the local SPCA had 8 rats for adoption.  8.  Who takes rats to the pound?  SHEESH!  Anyway, doing rescue is a really good thing.  Breeding quality rats doesn't mean they'll spend their whole lives in a quality home.

Only 8?  Our local shelter had about 20 rats the last time I checked.  And our local rattie rescue has over 100 (mostly boys)!!!!
