After taking my mother out for lunch today, I stopped into Petco for some supplies. As always, I "just had to" check out the little critters while I was there, even though I have no plans to buy any (no, not me!).  Here's what I found:

- Mother and what looked like 2 teenage children (1 boy, 1 girl) in a tank with a huge mound of bedding material heaped in one corner (a nest). Also in the cage: one newborn pinkie outside of the nest on the other side of the cage.

- One tank of "Fancy Rats" - teenagers of both sexes living together.

- One tank of PEWs - including a dead one under the water tube.

It took forever to get someone over to the small pets section to talk to. When I mentioned the pinkie (which the mother had found and pulled back under the nest) the employee in charge of that department told me that there weren't any nursing babies in that tank(!) The dead rat was removed from the PEW tank, but the male and female "Fancy Rats" were left together. The employee mumbled something about a "pet tech," as if she herself couldn't make decisions but would have to wait for said pet tech. Aargh.

*Heavy sigh!*

Once again, here's the petition:
http://think.100acrewood.net/petition.html

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read it and consider signing it and upholding a pledge to boycott Petco stores, folks! If you still aren't convinced, read the thread I started titled "Oh, God, I'm just sick!!! Petco!!" and keep in mind, this is just one story of many, many of them out there across the country.

I've tried and tried to deal with the store employees, managers, and with the corporate offices of Petco, and they aren't going to do ANYTHING about the fact that many of their stores are neglecting and even abusing animals until we all band together and MAKE them listen to us!

Please... sign the petition, and DON'T shop at Petco stores for ANYTHING!!!

each time i hear one of these chain pet store stories, it horrifies me more and more.  i just don't understand how people can be so ignorant about these things.  (i mean come on... when you put males and females together of ANY species, things are bound to happen...)  is it just that these people just don't get it?!? Henrietta or Pittsford? I won't set foot in either one of them anymore. I've never been into the Greece one, but based on the other two, I don't think I need to. I'm tempted to hand in my PALS cards and tell them, "I don't want to be associated with you anymore."
