Which bedding do you prefer?

I have some CareFresh I used on my mice, but I heard that probably wasn't the best choice. Aspen has been suggested...anything else?

I'm using Sani Chips right now (chipped aspen), and like it. I've used shredded aspen before, which worked well. I've also used Carefresh, corncob, and alfalfa pellets. I found a 'generic Carefresh' at a local petstore the other day. It's called Pets Preference, and is only $12 for a bag. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to use it on the next cage cleaning day. If I like it, I'm going to stick with that.
The aspen works well for the rats and mice, but I don't like it for the rabbit litter boxes. It just doesn't seem to absorb wetness well enough for two rabbits.

I like the shredded aspen for my rat cages. I've tried Carefresh, but I didn't care for the smell and the clumping. Also, I tried Cell-Sorb Plus, but the little pellets were hard and seemed uncomfortable for them (litter-box training hasn't worked for me, so I put it in the whole bottom, which is also where their igloo is). For a while, I was using cloth bedding, but changing/dumping/washing every other day, plus the SMELL *ugh* just wasn't for me. Everyone here has their preference, though, so don't take my word for it!

I use Yesterdays News. That and Cell-Sorb plus are almost exactly the same thing (really they are save for the name). I used Aspen for a while but I got sick of how badly it scatters. Now rather than having to vacuum every day or every other day around the cage to keep things presentable, I can go about 6 or 7 days. I also find the odor control to be a little better with the YN; the Aspen would get wet and smell a lot faster it seemed to me. It's $9.99 at Petsmart for a huge bag of YN, too! I'm going to have to stock up because back at school the cheapest place that sells the stuff sells the big bag for 18.99!

i use white tekfresh, which is the same pretty much as carefresh ultra, and then regular tekfresh (like carefresh) and then pelleted paper.
see, my old and sick rats get white tek, as well as the cage with the nekkids in it. its got no dust to it, no smell, and absorbs odor.
the "normal" rats get regular tek. i admit it, i love carefresh. always have, always will. it absorbs odor, doesnt get soppy and wet, and is nice and soft for the rats.
the pelleted paper is for the mouse - she is a pig and kicks stuff out, andt his absorbs her odor the most. i mix it with some tek in some areas to give her some soft bedding.
i have tried everything out there almost.
corn cob? UGH. hard, smelled funny, and no odor control
aspen? hated it. gets all over the carpets, smells when wet, and the rats werent happy.
sani chips? im sorry folks, i dont know how you use them
i am STILL pulling them out of parts of my carpets and clothing!

I used to be all about aspen, and it worked okay, but it clings to carpet and clothing like nobody's business, and can get soggy if you've got several rats that like to always pee in one or two corners.
I did corncob for a while, and that worked fine when I only had two girls in a big cage, but whenever they scuffled, they'd fling it out between the bars and it's a bit uncomfy underfoot.
I've now got carefresh in the rat cage (finally introduced the neutered boys and girls so they can share their space) because I found it controlled odors well for the boys when they lived separately. It's also a bit less fling-able, and even if it got pushed out, it's soft.
I use crushed walnut in my mouse tank, however, as I didn't want them eating it, and they adore digging and pushing around the fine particles. It also looks nicer than carefresh, imho, though that's of secondary value at best.

i tried care fresh but it made my hairless sneeze too much. Corn cob.....well who wants to lay on that? LOL. Yesterdays news is nice but expensive. Right now i use shredded cardboard. I get it at a pet store that probably gets it from a farm supplier. It is a HUGH bag for 13 dollars. And there is no dust and it's realitively soft and the rats can chew on it if they like.

I use walnut. I love it. It's cheap and absorbs both wetness and odors well. The main drawbacks are that it's heavy, and it isn't the softest thing, but if your rats have more than level, or use litterboxes, it should be fine.
I used to use walnut for my snake as well, but I switched to Carefresh. It doesn't look as nice, but he's happier with it, which is what really matters.

I use white tekfresh as well. I love it!!! I use to use Aspen and like it for the most part. But one of my rats is showing an allergy to aspen so I got rid of it. The white tekfresh has no dust which I love!
The right bedding is different for everyone and everyone's situation. I personally hate sani chips while some people love sani chips. It all depends.
I suggest trying different beddings and see what works right for you and your rats.

I use Shredded Aspen ,Yesturdays News and Carefresh . So far Aspen is what I use .only because I have to buy it in bulk and the others can be costly in the local pet store.

I tried out the hemp bedding, Life Mate, and love it! I can't stand the smell of Aspen or Carefresh, Walnut was messy and had no oder controll, I used corn cob for years, but it was messy and I think hard on their feet. Hemp has a nice grassy smell, seems quite absorbant, is soft to the feet and I just like it a lot.

Aspen makes me sneeze. Or at least I am pretty sure it was the aspen...
After having some very dusty batches of carefresh I switched to Yesterday's news. It's not as soft, but it's working so well for me, in reguards to smell, sneezing and everything else. It's relatively cheap too, though not as cheap as aspen... but like I said, a roomfull of aspen would likely make me sneeze all day so I'll pay the extra for YN.

i'm using papurr for the girls, bob, and boomer and teller, and yesterday's news for the nekkids and aaron/andrew/gus (because they sneeze on the papurr). mixed with lots and lots of shredded newspaper for nesting/playing/decorating.

I went to cloth bedding almost 2 years ago and love it. I use Carefresh (or Tek Fresh when I remember to order it) in my litter boxes.
I can't stand the smell of wet aspen and I don't like the way Carefresh gets all over my carpets at home. I use towels (1 bath towel covers the bottom of a Martin's) and change them daily. I also like the fact that it's a lot cheaper. I have 7 cages right now ( hopefully 6 after Margie's intro) and the cost of other bedding would be more than I want to spend.

I tried CareFresh, hated it...very dusty made my rats sneeze. I've been using Aspen and I'm satisfied with it. I can actually find it at my grocery store for $4.99 (big bag) and I freeze it 24 hrs or more just in case it wasn't package well and has mites. The rats never seemed to be affected adversely by it so that's what I've stuck with so far. It's true that it can stick to whatever it comes into contact with, carpet, clothes but it's never that much that's it's a problem...at least not for me and my household.

The ONLY bedding my rat likes is shredded newspaper and cloth bedding. It is all he likes and tis all he gets! He loves snuggling in some baby flanelnette blankets and when it is hot he likes lying on the newspaper....he wont take anything else.

I have to say, since Rascal has been in her recovery tank with towels down---it's kinda nice. Just pick up the poop through the day and change it at night. Extra laundry but I may try it in the cage and see how it goes. Aspen does kinda stink when wet and can be messy when changing it. (And I thought I'd never try anything else!)

I'm using Carefresh regular right now. I tried aspen, but it made one of my girls sneeze a lot, I think she might be allergic to it. I've used Carefresh Ultra, but it's too expensive for me right now. The regular Carefresh is dusty, but my girls are ok with it. They enjoy using it in their nest (they carry it up two flights to their igloo).

All of you Aspen users, what brand name do you use?
Have you found one brand of aspen to be dustier than another?
I want to go with aspen, but there are several brands out there, and they all look like their shredded differently.
Thanks.

I use towels...Mainly because I don't have a job, so I can't buy bedding all the time. I went to the salvation army, picked up like 10 towels, and I just use those. I change them everyday, and then do one big wash at the end of the week. It works great, and I don't have to vacuum bedding up all the time, although...I still have to vacuum food up, they always get it all over the place, lol.
