I'm using crushed walnut now, but, the rats are going to be in the kitchen for about another week because I'm painting my room, and my parents are a lot more stink sensitive. Which bedding will last a week for two rats using a litter tray?

I have two rats and not very well litter trained, and I find that carefresh does a great job of keeping the smell down. I don't smell anything until maybe the fifth day, and at that point it's usually just when I get close enough to kiss their noses through the bars ^^.

I also like CareFresh a lot, and people often say they can't smell my guys when they come over, even if the cage could use a touch-up. Smiley

Keep in mind, though, that everyone's nose is different. Some people don't like CareFresh because they say the bedding itself has a smell they don't like. Wink

I use aspen, and I rarely notice a smell after a week.  When the cage does smell, the culprit is usually actually their hammock or a cardboard box (they love to hide/play in them), not the bedding, unless it's been something like a good 2 weeks since a cleaning.

If you need to leave it a week, use Carefresh.  I'm one of those who doesn't like the smell of any wet bedding (including Carefresh and especially aspen), but Carefresh is the least offensive.

I use towels, but they need changed daily and definately won't last a week.

I use Oak pellets, and I don't notice a smell from my 2 boys or 4 girls. I am guessing it works about the same as yesterdays news.
Like Brandy said, if I notice a smell its from one of thier playthings and not the bedding its self.

I was going to suggest the walnut shell, but I guess that's not working for you. I use it for my 16 rats and often get comments (from non-rat people, too) that "wow! they don't smell at all!" Grin

But then again I am obsessive about how clean their cages are. I wipe them down every day or every other day and scoop out the poos and wet, dump out litter boxes and wash them, wash out the tray every 2 days and do a complete litter dump and scrub everything Roll Eyes

Hehe, anyway if walnut shell isn't working for you then I would also suggest Yesterdays News Wink

I prefer Carefresh. I've never thought it had a bad odor to it, and it absorbs smell really well.

I've used carefresh, but my parents don't really like the smell and it gets incredibly dusty. I'll try yesterday's news.

I put this on my thread about the vet, but oh well. The vet said that if walnut shell bedding is wet for more than a couple of days, it can develop a toxic mold on it.  Shocked 2 She also said that sometimes they eat the yesterdays news, since it's in pellet form! I guess I'll use carefresh.

I have never had a problem with Walnut shell and molding.. are you sure the vet wasn't thinking of something like Corn cob? because that will mold.

As for the Yesterdays News, I haven't ever had a rat eat try to eat it.. and if they did try it they would soon find out that it tastes yucky, I believe it is safe if eaten anyway.

Never had a rat try to eat bedding at all, even when I first changed to YN. Though I honestly think unless they ate a VERY large amount, it would be okay.. since it's just paper, really.

I use shredded aspen and can never smell the girls cage. If i do smell something, its usually them or the hammock.

you could ask 10 people what bedding they prefer and get 15 different answers Smiley

what i use for my rats tends to be white tekfresh (the same as white carefresh).

used aspen, no odor coverage for me.

used regular tekfresh/carefresh - liked it, but like white better Smiley carefresh/tekfresh is by far my fave bedding.

used sani chips - ACK. no more comment.

i use pelleted paper for somethings - like the meecer cage.

I've been using CellSorb recently. I think it absorbs smell better then Carefresh, which I've also used.
