Rats are my obsession!

« on: May 26, 2002, 02:24:14 AM »

I just wanted to applaud all those good vets out there in the world!  The only vet near me was not a vet who knew how to treat exotic animals, but he always did in an emergency.  I had never thought of giving rats an inital checkup, so when they had to see a vet it was something unexpected.  The first time was with tumours, which we did not know about because it was our first rats.  The vet, removed them beautifully without a hitch.  And then another time we had to put two rats down, at different times and he never charged us for it.  And finally two of my males had been fighting and so I took them out of the cage and put them in my bedroom on opposite ends, thinking they only needed space.  When I walked back in, one of my boys was sitting in a pool of blood.  When I picked him up I thought it was his intestines hanging out (scariest moment in my life) we rushed him to the vet he took him in right away, saw that actually Manny (the other rat) had just given him a neutering of his own.  He did a wonderful job again, and all with us being his only rat experience.  Even if I did have a rat vet it would have been about half an hour drive, so I would have gone to this vet anyways.  I just think vets like that are awesome, they obviously have a real dedication to animals and don't only look at it as a job.

Actually he has thanked us for starting to give him experience in other animals.  I know to get a rat vet, for general checkups and rat specific ailments, but for emergency I love this guy.

So I just wanted to say how much vets are appreciated.

I was lucky enough to have been part of Willie's life and I am eternally grateful for the 2.5 years she gave me.
