Rat Lover!

« on: May 28, 2002, 02:46:08 AM »

I have a momma and baby rats, but they are at my fiancee's house. I have no problem with that but I cannot get over their everyday to change old food, clean and play with the rats. Now she was quite mean when she first had her babies but has since loved my company whenever I play with her and even lets me play around with the babies in the cage without any nipping. But my fiancee claims that my rat tries to bit him. I just think it is because he likes to stick his fingers in the bars (my rat will grab onto your finger if you so that and see if it is a treat but never bits just gnaws). I was wondering if she really does try to bit though because she may not be accustom to him. Does anyone think she would bit him if he did reach into her cage and picked up the babies (their eyes just opened yesterday)? I can put my hand in there and she just sits there. Well any input would be appreciated. I just don't want any rat/fiancce related accidents happening while I'm not around. From what I know he claims that the my rattie is the devil, but I think it's just the attention factor (I don't know why but whenever you get a man a pet and a woman in a room the man gets really jealous if the pet gets more attention than he does lol). Well sorry about the ramble, I just had one of those long thoughts.

I never let anyone stick their fingers through the bars.  If he keeps doing that and getting bit, he is just asking for it.  I think you need to just watch him interact with them.  If he sticks his hand in and leaves it there and momma rat runs over and bites him, then that is totally different and maybe he wants to leave her babies alone unless you are there to take them out...

Well I guess she doesn't trust him, he put food in her cage today and she bit him. She will let me play with the babies in the cage and feed her but I guess she might not be to fond of people she doesn't know. Do you think she will be less likely to bit him if I take her out of the cage and let her interact with him outside the cage, with my supervision though?

It could also be because the momma rat is attatched to you, and no one else. Maybe she thinks of you as part of the family since you've been there longer and she sees him as an intruder and a threat to all. Also, nothing to do with rats really now but my cat, Trevor (such a sweetie!) only takes to females. He is terrified of my brother and other males because their voices are deep, they're bigger and they're scarier. He also came from a rescue where he was a street kitty and some ignorant bastard shot his dad right in front of him and killed him. I know that had to have traumatized poor Trevor and that's why he's petrified of guys. Could your rattie have had bad experiences with males and associates them all with bad thoughts?

Well I think it could be that I'm the only person that has played with her so far. I know she isn't scared of males though because the person who played with them at a pet store is a guy.  I'm going to have to get those two aquanted I guess. I'm sorry to hear about your poor kittys dad. Some people are really cruel. Well thank you all for your input on this.
