Illegal Smoke & Rats
«

Since I first discovered the joys of keeping rats as companion animals back in the fall of 2002 I've convinced a lot of my friends that they're wonderful little creatures and some actually now keep them as pets. One of my friends however is a major "pothead" and exposes his two female rats to marijuana on a regular basis and it always telling me how he loves to get them "stoned". I keep telling him that by blowing smoke in their cage he is harming their little lungs and allowing them contact with hundreds of carcingogens. Besides the fact he's destroying their fragile respiratory systems by doing this, is the pot killing their brain cells or making them stupid? Can someone please find me some information I can use to prove to him that smoke whether from tobacco or cannabis is very bad for his rats if he truly cares about them?
I hate to see people abusing animals like this, especially rats since I am very sensitive to people mistreating them. I doubt I'll have any luck getting him to stop using illegal drugs but if I can keep his rats away from them that's good enough.
Thanks

Er, basically anything you find on the effect on humans, it's the same for rats. Only their brains are itty-bitty, so killing a few brain cells does a lot more damage for them than for humans even.
The main problem, though, is their respiratory system. The two biggest health problems in rats are tumors and respiratory infections, and he's increasing their odds for both of them with smoke. Is this guy planning on spending the money on a vet when (not if, if he keeps this up) they wind up with a massive infection? Rather than linking to a couple articles, if you go to google and search for "rats respiratory" (no quotes) you'll find all kinds of hits, it's that big a problem.

Not only is that irresponsible it is an act of animal abuse and cruelty to expose ANY animal to a intoxicant. It is NOT in the least bit funny to get animals drunk or stoned. It's cruel.
THC (the active chemical in said herb - delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is fat soluble so it stays in the body for a looong time - bound to fatty adipose tissue (which the brain is mainly comprised of) and can impair cognitive and nervous function in such a small animal. Not only that, but the levels at which the various chemical substances in cannabis (marijuana) become toxic in an animal in concentrations much smaller than humans. Eating this plant can cause a large animal like a dog to convulse, become lethargic, incoordinated, aspirate and choke on vomit, etc. -Rats can die from marijuana toxicity (from eating this substance) because they cannot vomit. Animals including rats display ataxia (limb incoordination) and confusion. - A drug addled animal can become easily frightened and injured. - A small amount of pot given to a dog can lead to intoxication and illness that lasts for days. Think of what this would do to an even smaller animal such as a rat. Long term exposure to this for any animal can cause permanent brain damage.
One of the other main dangers to rats is that SMOKE of any kind is extremely bad for rats. Just as with tobacco smoke, cannabis smoke contains tars (in even greater concentrations) that adhere to the tiny airways in the lungs and bind chemicals and particles that are severe respiratory irritants to the lung tissue. Rats have delicate respiratory systems to begin with and outside irritants can inflame the tissues and lead to deadly, expensive infections, just as brandy said.

My friend, Sarah, had her BF take care of her rats when she went somewhere and he's a major pothead and he blew smoke into her rats lungs and they died b/c of it.

I wonder if anyone has any links to studies on the effect of marijuana on rats. I do not doubt what you guys are saying, but I think if you want to convince someone, like bmig1216's friend, sometimes it helps to have scientific studies to back you up.

You know, I accidently ran across a scientific study of marajuana and rats several months ago...I will see if I can find it on purpose
I don't allow smoking of any kind around my kids or rats.

I wish I never read this!
As for looking up info to provide for that person that enjoys blowing his smoke at his/her rats.....I doubt they would care anyhow. If its not hurting them they probably think its OK for the rats.

Providing extra information may or may not help. But it never hurts.

I managed to convince him that smoke is bad for rats and he told me he didn't know and from now on he won't smoke ciggarettes, cannabis, or burn incense or anything around them. He still seems to be into getting his dog and rats "high", and insists that if smoke is bad why not feed it to them, so I pulled up a response from this thread about the toxicity level in drugs being much more in small animals than humans. I personally don't think he should be owning rats if the only activity he enjoys with them is consuming illicit drugs.

he might be your friend and all, but he needs to stop, just as much as he needs to stop abusing his rats. you might want to consider getting help from law enforcement, or drug re hab.

Ask your friend why he thinks that his pets need to get stoned? I have to admit that it is great fun getting kitties stoned on catnip. I have a house and car and kids and stuff that would be confiscated if I were to be caught., So I live vicariously.
I don't think that rats get the same effect as people. They are smart, but our brains are different. I'm not sure that rats would consider the feeling pleasant. :confused:If he thinks that marijuana consumption is necessary for a happy life (not a good place to be in, BTW), convince him to feed them a little hempseed. It doesn't have THC, and is super healthy, full of omega-3 fatty acids (Woah! Acid maaan!). If he wants to give them a good time, get them more toys or something.
Boy, I hope he grows out of his stoner phase soon. He sounds like he has a serious habit that could get him big trouble. It's like it's the only thing that he can think of to make a fellow being feel really good. How can he afford to give it to his rats? Must be nice to have money to BURN.
Also If he is holding a lot, and if you are in the US, there are SERIOUS legal consequences.
Good luck! I had a lot of stoner friends, too. When I hit around thirty, all quit but one. You can't get a good job without peeing in a cup!

Blowing any kind of smoke into an animals face is abuse. Feeding an animal controlled substances is abuse. That being said Marijuana is not the evil most make it out to be!! I live in Vancouver BC Canada , and anyone who has been here will tell you that half the city smokes pot! People walk down busy streets in daylight smoking pot , there are pot smoking restaurants all over the city (two within walking distance of my home). and were not all dying from cancer etc.
Pot does have a higher amount of tar than cigarette's (1 cigarrette sized doobie = 10 mild cigarettes) but it does not contain the other 1000's of chemicals that cigarettes do, pot smoke is far less harmfull than cigarettes!!!!!! Have you noticed that when people smoke pot they cough, (sorry i can't remember the word I'm thinking of - it's what you call things that cause healthy coughing to clear lungs and passageways (and no I'm not stoned! LOL)) it is a healthy cough that cleans out your lungs etc. In fact there has been anecdotal evidence that people who smoke pot and cigarettes get less damage from the cigarettes cause the pot is cleaning them out. So i personally believe that pot is far less harmfull than cigarettes or alcohol!!
Now that I've finished my rant about pot not being 'evil' , I'll add no animal has the ability to ask its owner to get it high! You do not have the right to decide for your animal wether or not to risk it's health , emotional wellbeing , etc. Cause you think it's funny to get it high , i seriously doubt that Marijuana effects animals in the same way it affects humans you do not know what you could be doing to it!!!!! So save your pot for yourself (and please try to smoke it in another room) and you can laugh at yourself instead!!

last year, most of my mates were pot heads..and a lot of them had hamsters. the main thing i can remember, is being round where my best mate was staying at the time..and her bf and our mates all thought it was funny to fill one of the hamsters cages up with pot smoke (they were in glass tank things) ..i had to go out the room..cuz there was no way evry1 wd listen to me (maybe if there was just a cuple but not evry1). and then later on they had the cheek to say how the hamsters LIKED getting stoned!
i had my best m8 and her bf n my bf n a mate round here when i had my first rat too and my m8s bf wanted to get her stoned but obviously i said no. because i dont find it funny, i knew it was dangerous and there was no way they were harming my baby!!
dawn, one of the rats i have now, her first owner who was an old friend of mine got her stoned quite often, and the other 2 who i got for my bf a couple of wks ago, when i picked them up in the morning this grl was boasting to me about how she'd got them stoned the night before and they were lasying n their backs! and I had to stand there and listen to it all! SHE HAS A NEW BORN BABY TOO!
i mean yes these people were my friends (ive lost touch with most of them) but i cannot believe how little respect soe of them have for animals - even when theyre their own!
i could go on ranting like this for hours but i think ill stop now before i get too angry lol

I work for an insurance company, and you wouldn't believe how many of the nurses smoke (it seems like an oxymoron to me... nurses and smoking). They see people all the time dying of lung cancer and everything, and still do it to themselves.... so I guess people 'not thinking' that blowing pot smoke into animal's faces wouldn't hurt them really isn't all that far fetched.
And when I had my first rattie in college (before the internet and all the great info), he lived in a 10 gallon tank on cedar (although he was trained to come when I called him and my roomie loved him, so he just used the cage for a litterbox, he could come and go as he pleased), he was an only child, ate seed mix, I would dip my finger in my Coors Light (my taste in beer has since improved, hee hee)and let him lick it off (two dips was all he was allowed, he weighed about 2 pounds), my father fed him spiced gumdrops (Dad loves them and thought it was awesome to sit with Omar and chow on the candy together), pretty much every vice known to ratdom.... and he lived to be almost 4 yrs old with never so much as a sniffle. But I never thought a bit of beer would hurt him, because gallons of the stuff never hurt me!!!!!!! Who knew.

poor rats, i cant believe that this kid thnks that getting his pets stoned is kool, if i were you, i would ask him to stop and if he doesnt, tell his parents or someone, those rats dont need to be exposed to that, they live short lives already, why would anyone want to shorten them even more!

omg! i understand this person is your friend but he really needs help him and the poor rats. i have an idea but it is wrong and i dont want my message to get deletd. you MUST get those rats OUT! if hes doing drugs who knows what he may do when stoned. he could get high and decide to see how small he could squeeze his rats or how high they can fly(thrown) and drop them. this is not safe. i recomend getting the rats out (offer to take them off his hands) and then get this poor person some help. drugs are lame and people who do them have a serious problem and need help. stay friends w/this person but only if they start rehab. support them during rehab but if he starts up again you need to stop seeing this person. as a last resort you could call the cops or aspca?as for what i think of this person if i said it out loud i would be expelled from this site forever.

Sarah beth.....pot doesnt give you that kind of feeling so I doubt he will try to make his rats fly.
What he did was totally ignorant and I too support the other poster that pot is NOT the evil that people think it is (and NO I dont smoke it...I HATE it to be honest) like I said the War on Drugs has gone too far....our lawmakers sit there talking about a heavier sentencing for drug offenders (they need rehab to get better...not prison) while they finish off their second bottle of wine (ALCOHOL- the LEGAL drug that society accepts)
Go figure. I myself dont like anything mood altering in my body....I am already half crocked naturally!
Of course I think that exposing ANYONE that doesnt have a choice is WRONG and hopefully he will stop....he doesnt deserve to have pets if he is going to abuse them!

Yes, sarah-beth, calm down a bit. Pot is not hallucinogenic unless you do a WHOLE LOT of it at once. You're mixing it up with other drugs.
I don't smoke pot either (I can't stand anything that involves inhaling a substance, my lungs are way too delicate), but I don't think it makes someone a bad pet owner if they do. They just need to NOT do it around their pets. They also don't need rehab unless it's a serious problem that is interfering with the rest of their life - for most people, pot is not addictive, and for most people who do it occassionally it doesn't effect the rest of their lives in the least. Unlike, say, many people who get addicted to completely-legal cigarrettes and can't concentrate or start shaking if it's been too long since they've had one. Heck, some people even get that badly addicted to caffeine.

Folks, not to rain on the parade, but the issue at hand is not this person's life choice, or even the legality of the substance he chooses to smoke, but the safety of his pets, period, and what can be done to help keep THEM healthy. Thanks.
Doesn't matter if it's pot, cigars, Marlboros or incense... smoke is bad for rat lungs, period.

1stly, i tried not to join in with talking about pot instead of the rats..but i do have to just say that if sum1 smokes, theyre not necessarily gunna get into utha drugs (like i say, mosta my m8s from the last few yrs smoke it) - thats like saying if sum1 smokes theyre likely to start smokin pot. when thats completely wrong.
now that ive got that out, ill say wot i actually came on ere to say. i do burn incense in the same room as my rats, as my rats are in my bedroom. but they are over the other side of the room, and there is a window between them and the incense..and its always open..so i dont think its actually getting to them enough to hurt them..hoping anyway!
