When life hands you lemons, make a margarita!

WWW
« on: August 19, 2004, 10:17:08 AM »

Just wanted to let you all know that I am taking baby Smokie (6 weeks) into the vet. She has a a huge lump in her upper abdomen. It goes completely across her entire body. She won't play and won't eat. The other ratties are huddling around her comforting her.

There will be an update later this afternoon. Puppy Dog Eyes:  Sad 2

Just got back from Vet. Unfortunately it was not the same vet that saw them Monday, but he was still very good. Because she is so small (3 oz.) he can't tell if it is stuff in her transverse colon and is on its way out; or something in her tiny distended stomach that she ate last night (like slipper fleece). Eitherway the Vet gave me something that hopefully will loosen everything up and make it slippery so it will move through. If it is in her stomach, she probably won't make it.

He wants to know in 24 hours how she is doing. She is so weak now that she can hardly drink water. I can see the pain in her eyes, but can do nothing but let her rest for now.

I cried all the way to the Vet. Stresses like this make *ME* sick and now that I am home, it has hit me. It is all I can do to let you guys know what is going on. This is not so much about me as it is my little baby. Please pray that she makes it out of this healthy.

The doctor was not her usual vet. He probably didn't know about megacolon. I did some research on this before I left for town. Some of the symptoms didn't fit (can't remember which, now).

With this Laxatone, alternated with fruit, her mass seems to be reducing "somewhat". It has only been a few hours. She *IS* pooping, but sometimes while I am holding her (which every hour on the hour), she appears to be having problems passing them. So I have been "helping" her with a little gentle pressure. This is going to be a L-O-N-G night!! Embarrassed

We will know more tomorrow morning after 24 hours has passed.

It is interesting that as evening is coming on and it is time for the ratties to get up and play, they are being very gentle with her. They are frisking around with each other, but my popcorny Smokie is still being very lethargic. Both Rosie and Boo go up and check on her once in a while and will sleep with her to help keep her warm. Rosie "went with her" to the vet to be there for her and with her on the trip. That was so nice of Rosie to offer. Heart

*crosses fingers* i pray that she is ok. It is so sweet that your other girls are looking out for her. My best wishes go with you and poor little Rosie. Will she be able to see her normal vet at some point soon?

How horrible to have this happening to one so young!  Poor wee thing.   I hope Smokie (and you) had a better night, and she's showing improvement.  My thoughts are with you both.

It has been 24 hours since I notice the lump (I would rather call it a mass).

? The offending slippers and lamb fleece has been removed from the cage.
? Every 2 hours (even hours) she was given a drop of Laxatone (designed for cat hairballs). Then on odd hours she got as much peach as she would eat.
? With each session, her abdomen was massaged gently toward the decending colon and her rectum was massaged until I was able to "extract" a minimum of 2-3 HUGE raisins at each sitting. BTW, she was not happy about it, but was very "cooperative".
? Examining each massive raising revealed huge amounts of fleece running through it.

? Her lump/mass has gotten smaller and easier to feel the edges across the transverse colon. She will continue to get Laxatone and fruit throughout the day along with hourly massages.

Now for what everyone is waiting for. SHE IS STARTING TO BE HER NORMAL POPCORNY SELF AGAIN. Rather than hiding in a corner, she is right in the play frey and bouncing around the cage and on the bed. She is getting harder to handle when given her meds and massages. This means, to me, that she is not in the distress and pain that she was in yesterday. It might be MegaColon that she has/had, but it was caused by ingesting something that she should not have been chewing on.

I am 100% sure that the prayers you all said last night helped. They were in place to help me get up as often as I did and give me the energy and encouragement to take care of her. Your prayers helped her with her healing process. We are not out of the woods yet, but I felt it important to let all of you know and say  Heart Heart THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU  Heart Heart for all the advice, for all the caring, for all the prayers.

Hooray!  I'm so glad she's feeling better!  I didn't get a chance to offer advice or sympathy on the last thread (still no internet at home after the storm), so I was very happy to see this update after reading through the thread this morning!  Smiley

Wheeeew what a relief! & what a good
& devoted mama you are.  HeartCookie
Kiss for your patient!

I've only had ratties since Dec....but it
seems weird to me that she had eaten the
fabric bedding?? I'm used to rats nibbling &
shredding stuff, but have read time & again that
they don't tend to swallow stuff that isn't food
(& tasty food, at that!)

So for experienced rat owners - this situation
that Smokie has gotten into - how normal is it, &
how much should someone worry about it happening?
Poor Rosies_Mom sure didn't seem to have
anything unusual or dangerous in the cage. Do
some rats, like some dogs, just eat dumb stuff?

These were "Daddy's" old slippers. I am sure that they smelled like his feet. When I got up yesterday morning, she was coming out of the slipper and there was fleece (real lamb fleece) all over the cage floor. There had to be something in there that encouraged this behavior. It is not there any longer.

We are still doing the med and massage routine until there is no more slippers in her belly.

Thanks, guys and ladies, for all the well wishes. Even though I have much work to do today, I am going to take a well deserved nap. Blue Dumbo Smile

Oh what a naughty little girl, eating daddy's slippers like that! Live and learn I suppose, I sure hope she doesn't do that again! That must have given you quite a scare. I'm so glad she's doing better though. Smiley

I'm glad your baby is doing much better! I was very concerned.  However, in the future, please don't delete the original thread information, as now, it's an update and no one knows the original problem.... pretty confusing.

Edited:  Nevermind, I was scrolling down in the forum and found the original thread (which I merged ...).  Okie, in the future, please continue to update one thread, not start a new one!  No wonder I was confused!

May I suggest giving Smokie pineapple juice. An enzyme in pineapple juice helps to dissolve fabric materials in the gut. This worked when a ratlister's rat ate carpet material.

Good idea. I will do that. In fact since they live in a carpeted cage, it might be a good idea to give them each a "dose" of pineapple juice every day. They love taking licks of fun things from my fingers. I will start tonight.
