Hello.  I live in Central California (Fresno), and I am looking to adopt/rescue a rat for my son Joel.  He has had a rat before, and unfortuneately, he was unable to keep it, due to being rescued himself, by the CPS people.  Joel has been with me, perminently(sp?) in my home for 3 years, and has told me how much he misses his pet rat.  I know he would be a really good rat owner, and I was wondering if anyone out there (close) has any adoptable rats, or knows of someone who does.  Also... I was wondering what the financial aspect of it would be, to adopt a rat.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you (in advance)

You might check www.petfinder.com . I've seen ratties in shelters in your area on there, but haven't checked recently. You might also be aware that rats do best kept in pairs, so preparing for possibly taking in 2 boys would be most realistic. Smiley You will occasionally find a male rat for adoption that does best on his own though, so that's a possibility, too.

The adoption fee for rats isn't usually over what you'd pay for a breeder rat- somewhere around $25, give or take some depending on the rat, and the rescue/shelter. It's the cage, and preparing for possible vet bills, that will be your expensive first investment. Smiley But it's worth it! I hope that helped some. Best wishes finding your son a rattie companion!

wishing:  Ive tried petfinders.com, and I have called all the local shelters.  I know they have some at petco, but they didnt look very healthy, plus the store worker couldnt assure me that they would be the same sex, and said he didnt know how to tell.  Ive been talking to a lady who lives close to me, but currently she doesnt have any for adoption. So, Im still in the market for new additions for my family, if anyone has any other suggestions.

ps:  thanks for responding to my post.

I suggest adopting a pair of the same sex from a shelter or rescue in the southern Bay Area. It's a bit of a trek, but you can often find people who are willing to help transport the rats to you. There's a terrific rescue called RattieRatz in Mountain View (www.rattieratz.com). Diane, who runs RattieRatz, is helpful and gives out a Rat Healthcare booklet and other info with each adoption as well a coupon for 10% off any Martins cage. The best way to find people willing to transport is to post to the email list of the Rat Transport Yahoo! group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RatTransport/). Good luck!

I'm not sure how far she is away from you but Rattie Ratz always has rats available for adoption. There are a lot of people out there that will transport. As far as I know Rattie Ratz is in desperate need of homes for many of there rats.

There is also the RMCA. They have rescue ratties also. If your interested in see what the RMCA has available please let me know and I can get you in contact with Mindy, she's a board member but doesn't post to much these days.

Good luck in finding your boys. May I suggest you get your cage and supplies now. Martins Cages the best cages out there. Get the largest you can afford the rats will appreciate it and it will give you room to grow..because rast are like chips, you can never have just one or two or three...LOL

If you haven't already check out Suebee's site Rat Rule. She has basically all the info. you'll need to know to make sure that your new ratties are properly cared for.

I hope you find Joel his new ratties very soon.

If you're willing to drive down to North San Diego County, I still have some absolutely gorgeous dumbo/rex babies available for adoption. Let me know! Smiley

I have one two month old rat named Elliot. He needs a mate and is till a bit shy, but i'm really trying to find a good home for him (we can only have two rats- our first rat is female. the pet store worker mistakingly gave me a male rat, who hadn't 'dropped' yet, so i though he was female until a week later). email to me at artistaparajesus@praize.com. I live in Dinuba and can drive up there!

to eloborate on Elliots temperment and other details see my post "rattie near Fresno..."
He needs loving attention. I think he still has trust issues and i do hope that he can have a mate, another male, to play with. I am giving him up because i cannot provide him with such company.
